View Full Version : connecting that bedroom tv
I receive locals thru amplified antenna going to all tv sets in the house. I have 3 tv sets that have dish receivers. I would like to run a coax from the tv out on one dish receiver and combine it with the ota coax to a remote bedroom tv (one coax feed). Should I use a channel 3 combiner or a diplexor for the best results. I realize that it will be mono and I will be watching the same dish channel on the two tvs, but that will not be a problem. Thanks for any help.....

The best answer is "it depends".
How is the other TV getting Dish - via the RF coax or A/V inputs ?
If the other TV is getting via A/V, I'd simply run all the antenna coax through the satellite receiver, then use the TV/Video button on the remote to turn on/ pass thru the RF from the antenna.
If both TV's are using the RF (via an RF splitter), then I'd use the Signal combiner method on both TV's.
Or some combination of these two.
Thanks for the reply Scooper. I am using the a/v outs for the tv at dish receiver and the rf out for the bedroom tv. If I connect the ota antenna thru the dish receiver, I cannot watch ota on one tv and dish on the other. I am trying to make this setup as versatile as possible (and maybe trying to do something that is impossible).
Tom-g as scooper said if you are using the rf out already use the signal combiner method to give you flexibility as long as you don't have an over the air channel 3 signal it will work. In your original question you asked about a diplexor. You can only use the diplexor with a satellite signal you can't put over the air and satellite output on the same cable using a diplexor.
Thanks Boba. After alot of research, I did not know that a diplexer could not be used on the output side of a satellite receiver (until your post). I will definitely try using a channel combiner and thanks again for your suggestion.

If you hit the TV/Video button on the satellite, you CAN do it.
In the bedroom, you would be able to watch OTA
In the room with the receiver, you could watch satellite. AV plugs allow you to do this.
You guys might be my heroes. TonyM, I quess if I had not been so impatient I would have hit upon your suggestion.....just like a man!!! (as my wife would say). Oh well another afternoon of playing with my connections.

OK - so, in the room with the shared E* receiver -
Satellite coax from dish to IRD SAT IN.
Antenna coax to 2 way RF splitter. One side to the antenna input of the TV, the other to the TV IN RF coax input on the IRD.
RF out (of the IRD) to other room.
You already have the RCA connections - no need to fiddle with these.
The IRD ALWAYS outputs via the RCA connections (as long as it is turned on). The TV there can switch channels or switch to RCA for satellite.
The remote TV - can just select channel 3 for satellite viewing, or you hit the TV/Video button (turns off/on the RF modulater) and select an OTA channel with the TV tuner.
Yes Scooper, I believe that does it. I will try it when I get home. Talking about not being able the see the forest for the trees.....or something like that. Thanks again to all that helped. Sometimes it does help to talk things out.
Scooper just a note to let you know that your fix worked.....thanks.

Glad to help ! You should see MY setup :D ...
... I am using the a/v outs for the tv at dish receiver and the rf out for the bedroom tv. If I connect the ota antenna thru the dish receiver, I cannot watch ota on one tv and dish on the other. All you need to do for this to work is split the OTA antenna signal before you connect it to the DISH rcvr and run the new leg to the ANT IN jack on the main TV. This is exactly what I do at home.
I'm currently using a signal combiner on the RF ("To TV") output of my DISH rcvr to feed the TV in my bedroom. But no matter how I fine tune the antenna & output gain pots I wind up with a little hash in the video. So at some point I'll probably ditch the SC & go back to using the TV/VIDEO button.
