View Full Version : Can I do this?

I'd like to get the Whole-house DVR going. I have one HR-24 in the living room, and one HR-23 in the bedroom. I have never hooked up wireless Ethernet to either receiver. If I get the Whole-house DVR installed will that eliminate the need for Ethernet?

If not, can I add the Ethernet cable to my HR-23 in the bedroom instead of the main DVR (HR-24) in the living room?

Is it more beneficial to hook up the Ethernet to the HR-24 vs. the HR-23?

I have tried searching this, but I am overwhelmed by all the posts.

Thanks!

If you're wanting the Whole Home DVR service, the two must be connected.
Wireless simply isn't the best solution. Some have been able to have it work, but I wouldn't spend the money because it would be better spent on the "Connected Home Networking" [$148] that DirecTV will do for you using the coax you already have.
If you can get ethernet to both receivers, that works too.

The Whole Home DVR solution runs via your coax. The only ethernet needed at all would be from the DECA broadband unit and to the back of your computer, which should only be a few feet and D* supplies the cable with the installation. Wireless ethernet is not a suggested solution to the Whole Home setup and I would suggest that you see if you can negotiate a decent price from D* and have them do the job. For me that meant paying about $76.00 for the computer's DECA unit and installation, and they provided everything else that may be needed to make the whole system work. In my case that meant a new antenna (incl. LNB), a SWiM connector and two DECA units for my HR20 and 22. I thought it was one hell of a good deal.

Will I still be able to get on demand without ethernet hooked up?

If you have them add the Broadband DECA unit DECA that will get the On-Demand into your system via a coax to the DECA unit and a short ethernet cable into your router or computer. So you will need to have a coax line in the vicinity of your computer or D* will run it in for you. (They were willing to run 125' free for me, more would have been extra. I didn't need any since we simply went ahead and used the cable connections that were built into the house and all strategically located.)

Do you have an open or available ethernet port on the back of your router? You will need one for the ethernet cable that will run from the braodband DECA usit.

BTW, depending on whether or not your receivers are SWiM compatible they will only need one coax line into your HR2x. If it isn't compatible you might get a new receiver out of the deal. Check your receiver's SWiM compatibility ahead of time because if they change receivers and you have unviewed recordings, they will be leaving on the truck.

I did some testing with my hard wired ethernet MRV today. Bandwidth is awesome. I streamed HD to 3 receivers and downloaded a file off the internet with computer at 5 megs all at the same time. Not a blip anywhere. Thing I like about Ethernet, you can also use media share, direct 2pc with computer and of coarse on-demand works also.

Also remember if you use eithernet (cat5 cable) you need a router that will keep everything on the same network. So 3 receivers and 1 computer you need a 4 port hard wired router. I have dual 5 port routers piggybacked for additional computers and cameras so have two different networks but all use the same gateway.

Is it worth having an unsupported configuration or is it better to work your best deal and have upgrades/improvements done at the same time?

You can do that with DECA, too. You just need a DECA adapter connected to your router to bridge the DECA cloud to your network.

For most people going with deca with support may be best way to go. If you have to go buy routers and cat5 it would be better going with deca for sure. I already had everything when I set mine up.

I was familiar with networking so just did my own setup during trial period. But really everything worked automatically and could of been done by anyone.

Would it look like this?

Yes. You don't even need to run a separate line from the splitter. If it's easier, you can split one of the lines at the receiver and put the DECA adapter there if it's where your router is.
