View Full Version : which would you pick: dishplayer 7200 or 501/508?
I'm interested in the opinion of those who own (or owned) both a 501/508 and Dishplayer receiver. I am considering replacing my dishplayer with a 508 (and probably my legacy switch), but have never seen a 508 in action. I've heard the EPG is not as good. But as far as system stability, record features, ... Please ignore the PVR fee for the moment - I just want to concentrate on system features for the moment. I do not use the web tv function - and probably will not unless it becomes free (won't happen with Microsoft). I do like the EPG, PVR and the Instant News/Weather of the Dishplayer. Thanks and the door is now open... :)
When I was thinking of replacing one of my DishPlayers I considered getting a 508. Once I saw one in action the 508 was no longer a consideration (I got a 721 which has been a REAL disappointment). I suggest that you go to a local dealer that sells them and look and decide for your self (in most areas Sears sells them and some of the larger Radio Shack stores have one that they can show you).
I also suggest that you DO consider the DVR fee (if you decide on a 510 or a receiver from another vendor) because you will be paying it forever. Right now I don't feel that ANY of the DISH Network DVRs have the features (and stability when talking about the 721) to justify a DVR fee.
You may want to look at what other vendors (DirecTV and your local cable company) are offering. Don't limit yourself to just DISH because you already have their service. I'm not saying that you should switch but you should at least take a look at what others are offering.

I suffered with a DP for almost 3 years. Changing to the 508 was one of the better decisions of my life.

I have both. After I upgraded DISH offered to co,p me the DP fee for awhile. The DP has a superior interface and better search capabilities. but the 508 wins on reliability.

Ironically, the Dishplayer has been rock solid the last year for me........ (And I too was part of the bunch constantly having problems. Used the codes at least once a month to get it stable again)
Then again the Dishplayers are on light duty in two bedrooms as my 721 carries the big load.
I like the guide on the DP better, and the ability to block out channels I never watch is nice (without having to set up a favorites list that might miss new channels)
Easy answer: PVR508.
I've used all 3 models you mention. I personally have a PVR 501 at home but the 508 has double the HD space and it's $50 less than the 501 was when I got it.
DVR fees are not an issue with either the 501 or 508.
