I've had my 721 for a little over a month now.
This morning, the guide was really slow in coming up. The next time I hit "guide", the guide didn't come up. I tried pressing a different button like "info" instead, still nothing. I walked away and kept an eye on the TV. After about 5 minutes, the guide tried to come up then the PVR list tried to come up. No luck.
So, I pressed the power button on the unit itself. THe show conitnued to play, with sound, even though the power light was off. I cannot get it to turn off now, show the guide - anything.
What do I do (seriously - I mean, you can post your 721 vent, but if you could also include some assistance)? I trust you all more than the DISH people.
I'm hoping to not lose the 30+ hours of shows I had on the PVR....
Thanks!

Try unplugging it. And try rebooting - hold down the power button for 5 seconds or pull the smart card.

This sounds like a similar experience I have had with either the 721 or the 501.

SLOW GUIDE = time to reboot. For us thats every week or two. I think they should create a auto reboot time option, like 4 AM if its not recording. For a more ordely operation.

Even better in the setup screen let the user define the time and day of the week to reboot.
I was away and on my way home and the slow/stuck screens hit my 2 month old 721. Luckily my wife was home. I had her do the 5 second power button reset and all was back to "normal" (the 721 is never normal).
I would have been pissed had it happened and no one was there to do a reset and it missed recording.
A good tip is to do the reset right before you go on vacation!

The 721s should NOT need an auto re-boot option. First, we don't know why our 721s are becoming so slow but we do know that re-booting clears up the problem. The "clean-up" routines in the software most likely should be doing something that they aren't doing and that is why the software slows down. What most likely needs to be done is to fix the clean-up routines.
If a system has stable software the only time that it should need to be re-booted is when the software is updated or from a power-down condition.

I wonder what the potential of this 721 is if the programming of it was done to the highest extent with really good programmers or additional ones in which may have more experience with Linux. Linux is supposed to be pretty stable and reliable I thought.

Yeah but were talking about E equiptement here. I reboot everything about once a week now. It would be nice if I could automate it.

But what makes you think an auto-reboot function would work like it's supposed to? :)

Since I had not had to do a reboot yet, this worked. So, I should expect this about once a month? :nono2:
Regarding rebooting once a month---Luckily for me, my 721 unit has been virtually trouble-free in the 6 months I've had it. On one occasion it went nuts, so I unplugged it, replugged it, and after going through its startup routine, it has been fine ever since. My recommendation: Reboot only when you feel your unit is "losing it."

I, for the most part, have experienced very few software issues with the 721 but then when I do experience problems sometimes they can just be flat out annoying and troublesome. I also experience very few hardware issues until the pixellation problems start.
