I just recieved in the mail an estimate for the SuperDish upgrade and 921 HD PVR receiver. As the vendor states - subject to change.

Are you ready?

$1569.96.
Oh, this doesn't include labor - add maybe $150?

Frankly, too rich for my tastes. There is a line item for Superdish upgrade - $75. The Superdish itself is $200, and the DP-444 switch is 189.00. The 921 is $999.

Looks like another E* customer going to D* or digital cable.

Can anyone here better these figures?

Who is the vendor?

If the "DP-444" is the DP+4:4, it's interesting that the vendor includes it considering that it won't be available until 2004. The DP4:3 is what should ship with the Superdish.

Echostar will die if they do not provide free SuperDish ($49 install) to anyone who subs to HD pak for a year. Locking them into HD pak will cause them to enjoy the value of it, reducing churn.

$75 for me getting my new locals via SuperDish!?!?!?!?! What a crock! SuperDish should be free for folks being forced to get this bigger Dish just for that!

Everybody did read that this was the quote from an unamed vendor and not prices from Dish themselves? No offense to JMikeF, but take this with a grain of salt.

They should offer free SuperDish ($49 install) also if you commit to locals (which are located on 105 or 121) or a package with locals for a year. But what happens if you move to a location with no locals or with locals on a primary slot?

Then in you do a Dishmover it will only include a Dish 500!

Well, the vendor is VSSLL out of NC, and here is the actual estimate:

Ouch. I'm hoping that it is marked up a few. Otherwise this board will be screaming when this becomes official.

There are a few things that look a little "off" to me. First, on both the 921 and Superdish, the prices are plainly marked "subject to change".

Second, the info at the bottom says that two coax runs are required for the 921. I thought they showed on the tech chat, and in posters at Team Summit that you can split a single coax run using a new splitter they have, or will have, for use inside the house?

It does still require two physical hookups, but I think only one coax line into the room is required.

I was looking at this estimate invoice. Does anyone know for sure if you want to do the poor man's methos and just use two dish 500s to pick up the 119,110,105 birds if it will work for the 921? I thought I read somewhere that they were going to mirror everything on east coast bird to 105. Isn't that just a cheaper simpler solution till a deal can be found for super dish?

I fully expected the unit to be $1000, but I thought the extra set up equip costs might be negated to a deal at least under $200. I just think $1500 is a bit high of a threshold of pain.

A DISH 500 won't work for 105. AMC-2 at 105 is a ~60 watt/transponder Ku satellite, unlike the DBS satellites at 110 and 119. I'm using a 36 in. (90 cm.) dish to look at 105 right now. Superdish will be differently shaped, so can be a little smaller, but the 20 inch DISH 500 dish won't do it.

With the upcoming DishPro+4:4 switch, you can have a single cable going to the 921 and use a special splitter to feed the dual tuners of the 921. Unfortunately, the DP+4:4 switch won't be available until sometime in 2004. Until then a DishPro 3:4 switch will be required and the 921 will need two separate cables from the switch if you want to use the dual tuner capabilities of the 921.

Another advantage of having the DP+4:4 switch is that if you use a legacy receiver such as the 6000, the legacy adapter wouldn't be required. With the DP3:4 switch, the legacy adapter will be required.

The bottom line here is that if you ultimately need the DP+4:4 switch for the functionality you want and have a legacy receiver, you will have to pay for a 3:4 switch and legacy adapter and later pay for a 4:4 switch. If the 4:4 switch were available from the beginning, you could avoid the unnecessary expense of the 3:4 switch and legacy adapter. Nice going, Dish.

Thanks for the news, even though that really sucks...... Damn, I was thinking I might actually be ahead of the system. Boy, this really makes a new receiver a crap shoot in total.

I just got off the phone with Dish, talked to three CSRs, one in programming, one technical, one in customer disconnects (I didn't disconnect, at least yet).

Still giving out pretty vague information.

SuperDish out about October 1. No price yet, but expect promo for existing customers. 811 receiver expected out in same time frame, but got even more vague timeframe answers. Dish reps didn't know price, but Charlie already said the 811 was going to be $299. Don't know if there will be a customer incentive on the receiver.

Last rep said new HD programming package "will blow Directv out of the water". But rep wasn't able to tell me what is in the package.

I tried to figure out some way to keep Dish and get HD now....last rep finally suggested the 6000 receiver for $699.....yeah right when a newer 811 will be $299.....

I getting closer to moving to Directv, probably will wait for the September 8 HD Special Charlie Chat. If this doesn't get cleared up for us existing customers, I'm gone.....(oh, and interestingly enough, NONE of the three Dish reps mentioned that more info was expected in the September 8 chat.)

I think there's alot weighing on the Sept. 8th HD chat. It will certainly be interesting to see what we learn :)

I reccomend watching the Charlie Chat in a safe environment. Be sure there are no dangerous objects that you might hurt yourself or someone close to you with when watching the CC. If it is as informative as the last few chats have been people will be going on rampages.

I hope the dbstalk chat room will be able to handle all the people. My guess is it will be a good crowd in there. I also hope there will be some good info, if not it will be ugly.

Watch the chat live, PVR the MNF game and then watch the MNF game and skip the commercials. By the time you get to the end of the game you will catch up to live TV. (Includes skipping tedious ref challenges and change of possession delays)

Gee that would work if I had a 921 so that I could time shift the HD coverage of MNF....

It seems the quote is all MSRP. So I wouldn't put much faith in the estimate til the actual equipment was available. What I don't understand is the $199 charge for the superdish and then another $75 charge for a superdish "upgrade"?

As for Charlie's Chat on the 8th, I think we should start off by setting our expectation low.

YuriLuzr
08-25-03, 12:24 PM
How low?

heh, well I'm setting mine for no info at all from Charlie. It just seems that E* doesn't want to give info, then they can't be held accountable for missed dates.

If I hadn't been waiting, and waiting, and waiting for the 921, I would do just that. ;)

Does anyone still believe that Dish's true attitude towards this wasn't exposed in the July tech chat?

"Well, you paid that much for HD in the first place, you can afford to pay more ..."

Dish is pushing hard for media coverage at CEDIA (Sept. 4-6) so I suspect that the Sept 8th chat will be quite informative.

With any luck, at CEDIA I'll have all the info I need, and won't find it necessary to isten to the Charlie Chat.

No problem. :)

My local DISH retailer proved to me just how clueless some retailers are right now about the Superdish. He was totally convinced that Superdish would pick up 61.5, 110 and 119... and he just graduated from certification and showed me his card.

--- WCSYou might give him a break. They didn't teach him anything about SuperDish in the SBCA training for certification. Obviously he hasn't been watching the chats or reading the forums either.

But he'll get SuperDish training next month in plenty of time for the roll-out in Oct.

Scott,

That will depend upon what is considered "public information" and what is considered private information.

I have no problem sharing information for public consumption, but if they ask that certain pieces not be disclosed, I have to respect their wishes.
