View Full Version : Dish and Google TV
Google announced today a new way to watch TV and videos and view the internet. It is suppose to be a multi-platform box to tie everything together in one box. Dish was onstage in California with Google and I believe reps from Sony. Also note that Logitec will make a box to use with the system. I believe it will also match up with a Wii box. The new platform is do out this fall. I am wondering if this is another way to use the Dish slingbox platform.

It wasn't today, it was about a month ago.

I am in the process of signing up for DISH. I will be getting VIP722 receiver. Is this future proofed in terms of support for GOOGLE TV coming out later this year or will they announce a whole new class of receivers? The press release says that the HD DVR receiver will connect to google TV device via HDMI. I don't understand this. Will the HDMI out from receiver go into google tv device (or vice versa)?

Nobody knows yet. Google was going to have a box. You'll just have to wait.

Huh? What is your point?
Got a survey in my email box today with questions about pricing for Google TV and Dish.
Sounds like from it they want to charge like $200 upfront plus a monthly charge for the service.
I stated that unless it offers SUBSTANTIALLY MORE services and functionality than my PS3 than I wouldn't pay an extra dime upfront for it and no monthly fee. If it was WAY better than my PS3 in terms of internet stuff, then I might pay a small monthly fee or an under $100 upfront fee, but I don't think it will be able to deliver anything really worth that at this point.

If they want $200.00 for it, they can forget me.

Same here. I took the survey and was surprised at how much $ they were referencing in the questions.

I also took the survey, and their price points are very high it seems. I was impressed with the way the system works though from a video on Engadget.com.

I would pay $200+ for it as long as there is no monthly fee. I can replace some of the aging media center pc's in my house with something smaller that runs cooler.

I have been long looking for a simple device to do internet browsing in the living room (never liked the idea of building a HTPC) and this would ft the bill perfectly and I would also be wiling to pay around $200 if the blue ray player is thrown in. I feel this device if offered through the likes of SONY will be far better than a similarly priced HTPC. I don't really care about how well it is integrated with DISH programming. If anything, it is going to dilute the DISH offering with crappy youtube videos. I am not sure what DISH is trying to get out of this deal other than a nice search engine which you can search with a real keyboard

I was aware of ps3 (and also other players offering web). First of all it is mainly a gaming platform and it is very good at it. The rest is side show - have seen number of posts on how incomplete the browser is (flash support etc) in comparison with a PC. Reading the specs of this google device, I feel this would be as good as it gets bringing the web experience to the living room. Of course the main content providers would find ways to cripple this too.

According to tech blog Engadget.com, they are reporting a release date of Septemeber 29 of Logitech's Revue with Google TV for $299.
But the report says that Dish customers will be able to get Google TV for only $179!
I wouldn't pay 3 bills for it, but $179 is reasonable....we'll have to see what kind of monthly fee Dish charges, if any.

The PS3 and Wii Netflix Live interfaces are currently kind of Rube Goldberg in that one must insert a DVD/BD in order to bring up the viewing interface. You do not use the gaming platform browser.
That said, the Xbox360 does not have the "side show" interface you describe. Microsoft issued a firmware update to seamlessly incorporate the Netflix Live Interface as a simple menu choice. I do not see how that interface could be improved. (I bet I'll have to eat my words in the future. lol  )
