I'm in my 60th day with Dish Network and I have noticed that it takes about 6 or 7 seconds for the signal or channel to appear on screen. I have a 301 unit downstairs that comes on very quick (one or two seconds at the most. Is the PVR 500 unit normal. or is there a promlem?
I see a bit of a delay on my 501 and 508 but not 6 or 7 seconds.
Skeeterman you have posted about rainfade and your posting about slow picture aquisition on your DVR. What type of signal strength do you have? Those two problems generally are associated with weak signals. Kansas is near the geographic center of the country so you should be near 125% on most transponders. After 60 days you may have corrosion on fittings reducing your signal.

It's going to take more time for your PVR unit over the 301 because the PVR is taking the satellite signal, saving it to hard disk, then re-reading/ decoding the programming/ convert and display it.
However, it sounds to me also like you have problems with your installation - check the signal strength of each trnasponder on the "Point Dish" menu, and if it isn't there, go trace all your RG6 coax and verify that all your connectors are tight and weatherproof.

How long does it take on a Dish DVR vs a DirecTivo to change channels?

Timed it right now on my 508. From channel 176 to 184, it took 4 seconds.

Thanks for all your advise and ideas. I don't know what signal strength I have, so how do I access the "Point Dish" menu to see the signal strenght?
