Why don't many DVD players (stand-alone) have a built in RF switch like a VCR does?

VCR's record, DVD's don't. There is no need for the unit to have a video input. It would just make the unit more expensive. Plus most DVD's don't even have an RF output.

THAT was the point of music_beans' question.

My answer: The primary purpose of watching movies on DVD is for the superior picture quality. To downgrade and modulate the video signal would result in inferior PQ, and that would defeat the purpose. If you want to watch DVD movies via your TV's RF input, get an RF modulator, or just watch a VHS format flick on your VCR. Either way, you'll get a relatively poorer quality picture.

Although I learned the hard way when I got my first DVD player in 1999 ($300 for a piece of junk RCA, that played only 75% of the DVDs I put in it) and tried to plug it into an old 1987 model TV (with no RCA or S-Video Connectors). I'm sure some people have run into that situation. But your solution of an RF modulator will work, and the chance of having a TV without RCA or S-Video gets rarer and rarer. But for those who want to buy a DVD Player for "Grandma", check ahead of time, as her 30 year old TV will require a modulator.

Well, I've been a great-grandfather for a year now, and yesterday I ordered my first HDTV. It's a 53" Panny PT53WX42. It will be delivered tomorrow (Friday). I dreamed about it all night last night, setting it up, tweaking, showing it off to my clueless, dweeb neighbors. It was a busy, but a happy night. :sunsmile:

Maybe today I'll go out and order a beautiful woman so I can dream about 'tweaking' her all night! :icon_bb:
