I am kind of in an unique situation. I currently have a 522 DVR receiver in which tuner 2 no longer works. I have to get another receiver. The problem is, right now I can get my local channels from the state in which I live no thanks to the FCC. Where I live at I am suppose to get locals from the neighboring state in which I could care less to watch. I could probably call Dish and tell them to cancel my account due to the receiver problem and they might be willing to send me another receiver in which I could upgrade to HD. But doing so I am worried that somehow in the process I would lose my state's local channels. I could buy my own equipment in which I would not have to worry about the problem but would be a more expensive solution. I have a Dish 500 dish right now and feel I could get a 1000.4 and install it myself and then just change out the receiver without a Dish tech person coming out. What would you do in this situation? Or if you have another idea that would be inexpensive and a solution to my problem please let me know.

Desperate people do desperate things.

Are you saying that your equipment is not installed at the service address you have given DISH or that you have somehow grandfathered locals from a time when your area was in a different market?

If your equipment isn't at your "service address" (a violation of your agreement with DISH) then having an installer come to your property could be a problem. The shuffle to get back to what you have now may raise suspicions.

If you are at your service address and are somehow grandfathered that situation won't change and I wouldn't worry about getting professional help on the upgrade.

You could also buy the warranty, have them replace the 522 and then cancel it. It won't be free, but it won't be too costly either. You could do it yourself...only issue would be the one mentioned by James Long.

Do you think that I was to call Dish up and tell them that tuner 2 quit working on my 522 and that I wanted to cancel my account with them so that I could switch to Direct TV to get brand new equipment, that they would offer to upgrade me to a better receiver and just mail me the receiver so that I could swap it out myself?

Telling them you want to upgrade to HD is a sure way to have a tech visit

Do you think that I was to call Dish up and tell them that tuner 2 quit working on my 522 and that I wanted to cancel my account .... Only if tuner 2 failed on your 522 and you really do want to cancel.
