Branding sells products. It's probably not something that is as important as it once was, but it does sell.

I once read that Dish likes to keep development of it's IRD's in house b/c they wan't to minimize the security threat of Hacks and systems cracks. I know that the Dish security system is inherently harder to break than the DirecTV system is. So my question is:

Would having different Consumer Electronics companies make Echostar Receivers be that big of a security threat, or is there another reason to keep all development in house?

Doesn't JVC do Echostar hardware? I thought Phillips or another company also used to do E* receivers. I have a JVC receiver.

AFAIK, All Echostar and Bell Express Vu receivers are physically manufactured by Sanmina SCI Corp. Branding agreements were done with JVC, Philips (not anymore though), and RCA. This was done to get Dish in national retail chains. JVC for Sears and Media Play (and CompUSA and SunCoast), Philips for Ames and Target and RCA for WalMart and RadioShack. To contradict what I said above, it has also been said JVC and RCA do make the receivers, but to Echostar specifications, but I never really seen it proven, it's possible, but from what I read, Sci makes all the receivers.
