USB2 only. However unlike the D* DVR, adding a USB2 hard drive doesn't supersede the internal disk, it only adds to it.

I have also wondered if there was a eSATA to USB cable like the DVI to HDMI cable.

You can put an eSATA drive in a USB enclosure (cheap) if you don't already have a USB interface.

By definition an eSATA drive already is in an external enclosure. eSATA is the abbreviation for external SATA. You may take a SATA hard drive and put it in an enclosure with a USB connection.
