I have three old receivers I just deactivated (have purple cards)...I am probably going to ebay, craigs, give, garage sale, whatever them - but before I do --

Will Dish still activate them for another customer? I dont want to sell them and rip someone off if they cant be turned back on.

Dish 508 DVR
Dish 3000 (yeah I know, boat anchor)
Dish 2700 (yeah I know.....I know....)

508 is the only one worth reselling. It may not be good nrxt year but it works now.

I recently activated my old 4900 about 3 months ago (maybe a little longer). It needed to have the new purple smartcard, but after that was in and it was married to the receiver - things have been hunky dory since...

One thing - when I said I needed the new card - the CSR was being "reluctant" to do so, and sent via "slow" shipping, not the usual overnight. I got the feeling that they really would have preferred that I just get a newer receiver instead of activating that dinosaur.

Now since you want to "dispose of them" to another potential customer - you need to clear them off your account and tell Dish that as well .
