Wow. This is what I have been waiting to hear!
Any news about receivers? With 6000 on its way out, is there anything about 811?
Thanks.

EspnHD is a separate channel, but currently most of their programming is mirrored from the main ESPN channel.

That's great news! Especially about the mirroring at 110!!! Thanks Dustin.

Yeah, what a ripoff. I'm moving to D* tonight.

Seriously, I bet there will be more coming once SuperDish is out, but you'd be hard pressed to say that the 3 new ones aren't the most highly anticipated/most requested.

I called and talked to a (not very knowedgeable) CSR. She couldn't find anything about how to order it yet. Anybody who does please post the magic words to tell the CSR!

couple questions....what is the legitimacy of the Nov 1 date for the 811 and 921? Is this just another date being thrown out that may easily be tossed aside? or was it somehow based on some more substansive evidence (like software/hardware being finalized and ready to build?)

assuming a 921 or 811 comes out, will I be able to use my dish 500 for the time being and get these channels? (Assuming of course the superdish isn't available right away?)

thanks

I thought the 811 would be available in October???? I personally just want the 811 instead of the 921. Funds mostly. Anyone that can give me info would be great. It's great to see that Dish got on the ball and got the most wanted channel in HD (Espn-HD). Great job Dish!

This appears to be a temporary solution until the Superdish is up and running; I doubt these channels will remain on 110 for very long, just long enough to give customers a reasonable time to install the Superdish.

I suspect we may here references to other channels coming on the Superdish in the very near future. Certainly, they will want to emphasize that the HD content on 110 is temporary, possibly by making it a free preview for 30-60 days. They may also emphasize this using a HDTV demo or info channel on 110 degrees, as well as their web site.

I'm hoping we will see a detailed timetable of what will be available, when, and where at the Charlie Chat next week.

If they mirror those on 148 great news. If 110 that sucks for us in Alaska. It's good to here that they are adding them either way though.

I'm happy to see that E is providing programming for the people that currently own a HD reciever. This does nothing for me. I'm in the market to buy a HD reciever, the 6000 is not an option. two more months wait for the same programming as the competition does not compute in my world. E needs to make a press release on future plans and pricing next week. Charlie and retailer Chat's is not the proper forum for this type of information. Mention it in the CC, then make a press release and then deliver the goods.

I just read on DBS forum that the start date for the HD pack is Sept 17. $9.95 for the 4 channels is a good value. I'm very happy that Charlie and Dish decided on this approach. I think it makes the most sense - a win-win. THANKS AGAIN DISH. I'm glad I chose you for my satellite provider. Now I will see my Dolphin on Sept 21.

Here is a thought, howabout they sell us a 6000 receiver now for $299 with a free trade up to an 811 as soon as it's available. Then Dish can sell the used 6000's for $199 or as giveaways with programming commitments. Dish doens't loose any money and they get to sell product today. :)

I tried to get a 6000 last month. Dish doesn't have any, and after checking with local retailers, apparently very few, if any, are out there. Dish told me they are out of production, so it would take just as long to get 6000s into subscribers hands as it would 811s.

I am still waiting on the definitive word as to when 811 and the 921 will be available.

From a very good source:
The 811 will be available later october early november. THe superdish is having some production problems and they are working the kinks out. This pushed back the release date a few. Not too much longer now guys. Keep hanging in there. Good to hear ESPN-HD is in the new package.

I had word from Bravo a few weeks ago that they would be on DISH once their new dish was available. My only question is what will I now be charged since I got the 8psk upgrade and signed up for DiscoveryHD in late May for a year???

I just talked with a Dish CSR and she told also confirmed the monthly price, but also told me that the annual price would be $109.89 (which IS a discount off of the 9.95/month price). For those of us who have already paid the $95.88 annual DHDT subscription, we'll be able to pay $14.01 (+ partial month pro-rate) on 9/16 and have an annual subscription to the whole (as yet) enchilada. WooHoo!

If this is true, Dish will be keeping me as a customer. Comcast has announced they are rolling out HD in my area on 9/19 and I was planning to dump Dish for failure to deliver on HD promises. I'm currently paying $8 a month for Discovery HD, so for $2 more I get the new channels?

I am still waiting on the definitive word as to when 811 and the 921 will be available.Well, the latest word (on today's RChat) was that 811 & 921 are on target for "late Oct." Realistically, that means they will be coming out the end of the pipeline early Nov.

According to Charlie (today) 6000u's will be around thru October and willl be discontinued "then."

If you really want a 6000u now you can find one if you call around or buy a used one on eBay. (If you get one on eBay w/o the 8psk module you can get one from dish for free with an annual pre-pay for the HD Pak.)

BTW, I just watched the RChat again. After talking about "late Oct." for the new rcvrs Charlies said Nov. 1st was the "target date" for the new HD rcvr systems w/SuperDish. (SD for locals should be shipping early Oct.)

Beggars can't be choosers. Now is hardly the time to be complaining. They have clearly been listening to our complaints and have done virtually everything we have asked for including at least announcing ESPN-HD at the start of the NFL season, maybe we will miss a game or two, even I am satisfied with that(of course I don't care personally, just as a retailer, I don't even have an HDTV, just a 20 inch TV and a 508). Charlie gets a thumbs up from me tonight. I won't say anything bad about him for at least a week, probably longer. How many cable systems have BravoHD or InHD anways right now. Plus, $9.99 is a great price. Charlie rules tonight.

So do you all think they will keep these new HD channels mirrored on 61.5 for awhile for those slow migrators to SuperDish? Do they need to motivate current HD people to go to Superdish? Or will they just ramp up on new HD installs and catch the laggers later (a la Dish 500). I imagine that it would take them awhile to produce enough SuperDish's to accommodate all the current HD subscribers, especially if there were channel(s) that could only be acquired by SuperDish.

I would guess they would mirror to 61.5/148 until they have enough supply to cover existing HD people and then give them carrot/stick to upgrade.... new channels only on SuperDish + upgrad deal for existing customers (hopefully FREE with 1yr commit).

I was excited about this until I went to www.hd.net and saw their programming lineup. There are a few things on HDNet I might watch, although nothing I'm that eager to see. However I couldn't find a single movie in the 7 day guide on HDNet Movies I'd even want to watch.

Toucano

Is everyone confident that the bandwidth exists on 110 to make this watchable, or should we expect an increase in compression on the other 110 channels?

Either way, its probably the right thing to do to stop churn caused by the lack of ESPN HD right now.

This seems to be the first good call Dishnetwork has made in awhile.

Ken_F
09-05-03, 09:34 AM
Taucano,

According to Lyngsat, Echostar has three unused transponders on 110--sufficient for six HDTV channels with 8PSK. Standard channels are on different transponders and should not be affected.

Mike123abc
09-05-03, 09:47 AM
I am personally hoping to keep them on 61.5/110 until they get the DishProPlus 4 satellite switch out. I do not want to give up my 61.5 dish and buy a new switch to point it to 105 for a few months only to have to buy another new switch to get it back.

I have a switch 64 right now. I do not want to have to buy a DP switch and legacy adapters for just a few months before they come out with DPP where you no longer need the adapters and get 4 satellites back.

Once again folks, a little perspective...........

1. ESPN HD next week, along with 2 HD Net channels. In effect Discovery HD drops to $2.50 a channel if all 4 are given equal value.

2. 811 & 921 around Nov. 1st. And these are hard dates in a press release that investors have used to bid up the stock price, so I'm feeling good about them right now.

3. 811 goes up to $399, buit everyone assumed it was a typo anyway.

and most importantly.........

4. These channels will go onto the existing birds NOT the new birds that require the Superdish for now. So anyone with equipment can view them until they get the new system up and running.

This is good news people. Let's give E* some props for delivering some good news for a change to us that doesn't involve LIL additions.

I have a stupid question. You know how on the ESPN-HD commercials it says, "sponsored by Philips and Best Buy"? Now that it's on Dish, will a large Dish retailer like Sears, Radio Shack, CompUSA, or Costco want to be a "sponsor" of ESPN-HD and added to the commercial? I wonder if that was part of Dish's negotiating.

I had a meeting with Dish's PR people, and a nice long discussion regarding all of this.

All of the reported info so far has been spot on:

811: $399 (not the earlier reported $299)
Superdish: Realistic timeline Mid-October to November in consumers hands.
Channels: ESPN-HD, HDNet, HDNet Movies all available on Sept. 16.

Other things not directly covered earlier:

The new content (mostly to keep up with DirecTV right now, with more to come later) will stay on 110 for the forseeable future, so that there's some time to get SuperDish into the pipeline and installers up to speed.

Personal opinion: They won't migrate these 3 channels to 105 until June of 2004

Also, as reported by others earlier, with America's Everything will have no DVR fees, I think AT150 has a $5 fee, and AT100 has a $10 fee.

That's all for now, time to head off to the first event of the day.

I've been a subscriber to Widescreen Review since the third issue at least a decade ago and they are a valuable source for all things in the Home Theater arena. My eyes glaze over when they get into some of the technical details of new technologies, but their coverage of DVDs are great and they were one of the first publications to embrace (and push) the D-Theater format to give true recordable HD content prior to anyone else.

Thanks for the inside scoop. We're desperate for any first hand account info that is out there.

Tampa8, I didn't have my notes in front of me when I was typing this post in -- but if you read all the words of my post, I did point out I wasn't 100% sure when I typed I think around the fee structures for the DVRs.

Also, thanks for supporting WSR, I appreciate it, and I know that Gary Reber does as well.

Generically speaking:

For anyone wondering, I've been a Dish subscriber since 1999 and am in the same HD boat as the rest of the gang. After speaking directly with several people (PR and Technical) I do feel much better about Dish's HD strategy.

Is it September 16th yet???
