View Full Version : Stupid lightning

I think my house or property was struck by lightning. There are no obvious signs, except that after a big storm, my Starband Modem was fried, the NIC it was connected to was fried, a Linksys wireless bridge was fried, a TV was fried, and my DISH Network receivers (I have two)could no longer see the switch in my DISH 500 dish.

So I thought I would buy a new LNB. It came and the receivers still could not find the switch in the new LNB. So I replaced out the RG-6 cable. Still no switch seen on either receiver.

I think that somehow the receivers themselved must have gotten fried inside. Even though they power on, they just can detect switches anymore.

Anyone know if that is possible? I don't have any other receivers to test with, but I am leaning towards buying one if anyone could tell me if my logic is ok.

Thanks!

Welcome to DBSTalk, kinggodzilla! :hi:

I'm not terribly familiar with the starband setup - what kind of lnbs does it use - legacy duals or a legacy twin? If you have duals, then you have another switch in your coax line that is probably fried. If you have a twin, and you replaced it with a new one and the receivers still can't see the switch after you've run a check switch, then your receivers probably are the culprit. Are your RG6 runs connected to a properly grounded ground block before entering your house? Are your receivers plugged into a decent surge surpressor? Does the check switch on both of your receivers report no satellite reception?

Thanks for the fast reply. I am not sure on the Starband setup. It was professionally installed. When I called them with the problem on that, they said the modem was dead.

On the DISH network TV side, both of my receivers cannot find the switch in the old or new LNB. I have each connected to a good Belkin Surgemaster. I guess I will look into replacing them.

As for ground on the RG-6's, I will have to check where it is grounded. I did not do the install, but believe it is run to the house ground.

Guess I'm adding some more $$$ to that insurance claim. :)
Thanks for the help!

Starband dishes used 2 dual LNBs so you should have 2 SW-21 switches someplace in the system mostlikely near the dish.

In that case, definitely try replacing the 2 switches before the receivers! That's a more likely scenerio.

Try bypassing the surge suppressors to test the signal. Sometimes suppressors are known for committing "suicide" to protect the attached equipment.
