View Full Version : Advice on best in home HD distribution solution

I've got 2 722's located in primary viewing locations but have 3 "community" viewing locations that I want to be able to get HD content on. Currently they are all hooked up via coax to the home distribution output (tuner 2) of one of the receivers. This setup is exactly what I want, but I need it in HD rather than the SD output of the home distribution. What is my best alternative to get a tuner 2 HD output to multiple locations (need to be able to have separate "tuner" capability to what is being watched at the primary location but its OK that all 3 locations get same output as long as it can be controlled from any of the locations).

It doesn't appear that Dish has any hardware that can meet this need? Does Direct? 3rd party? Any and all ideas welcome!

If a solution can leverage the existing coax that would be ideal but I"m not opposed to running alternative infrastructure if that matters. Doesn't appear tuner 2 can output HD at all though?

Since you asked about DirecTV, no DirecTV doesn't have a TV2 HD (or SD for that matter) output solution like Dish.

What they do have is Connected Home and Whole Home Viewing (aka Multi Room Viewing). Using the same coax feeds that carries the DBS signal you can view HD recordings from any HD DVR on any other HD DVR or HD receiver, so you'd need to have one or the other type of receiver at each TV. Each HD DVR can stream to only one device at a time beside local viewing of live or recorded content. The Connected Home setup is free for new customer installs, Whole Home Viewing is $3/month/account.

Doesn't appear tuner 2 can output HD at all though?Correct. TV2 output is SD only (except on the 922 where TV2 is used to Sling a HD signal).

Did Dish/Echostar finally come out with the catcher for TV2 to get a HD signal or is it still 'coming soon'??

Correct. TV2 output is SD only (except on the 922 where TV2 is used to Sling a HD signal).

What would I need in "Room 2" to put this 'sling' HD signal into my monitor? Computer? Media Extender? Another receiver?

The "catcher" ... when it eventually comes available.

The "catcher" ... when it eventually comes available.

Or one of the similarly unavailable wireless monitors that Dish is going to support with the 922 would work... though I'm not sure those will be available in sizes as big as some people will want.

I have a 612 hooked up to two tv's I use component cables to the tv where the 612 is at and ran 50' hdmi cable to a second tv. You won't be able to view separate channels on the two tvs but you will get hd output to both of them at the same time.

check out cablewholesale.com for hdmi cables

I have a matrix switch and eventually disconnected it because I had problems with it sometimes using a 50' hdmi cable. Like I said I use component video cables to one tv and hdmi cables to the other now and this works great. Both tvs receive a hd picture at the same (with a switch you can only watch 1 tv at a time) and I dont have to worry about switching anything. I see they make powered switches and splitters now that they did not have when I bought mine. I would try a powered hdmi splitters if you want hdmi to multiple tvs.
