View Full Version : What should I expect from Directv pro installation?

I am just wondering what I should expect from Directv installation on Tuesday when they come. They will be installing one Directivo and two basic receivers in my house, and the dish. The thing that concerns me the most is the wiring. Obviously, I want a good job done. I don't want wire laying all over the place in my house. However, I am nervous about how much extra that will cost me. I have read various documents that limit how much wire they can use and how many holes they will drill and so on. Needless to say, I am trying to get a good idea how everyone else's installation went. Should I be nervous? I just hope I get someone knowledgable.

I have a two story house. My basement is unfinished so that should make running wire easy. In fact, I ran ethernet to all the rooms in my house without a problem by drilling through the floor. I don't know if directv will want to drill through the floor, but I really want a good job done when they do the work. I would really like it in the walls if possible with a switch that is easy to access.

Could you give me some idea what to expect? Am I expecting too much? If so, how much do they charge? Thanks!

Here's the best advice I can give you:

Watch them like hawks, but in a friendly way. If you don't like something, tell them, and don't be afraid to challenge any "charge" they might cook up to make the job look neater. If you currently have cable they might be able to use the existing wiring if it's RG6. If you want to run new cables through holes in the floors, and they call this "line fishing," you're getting ripped off. Tell them exactly what you want done (drawing a diagram doesn't hurt), and like I said don't be afraid to voice concern if they're doing a crappy job.

I just checked the wiring in my house. It is labeled RG6 and that is very good news.

I have decided not to worry about it. I figure since I already have the holes drilled and ethernet run in the house, they should be able to run one extra RG6 run in to the living room. I can breathe a little easier now.

I am still open to suggestions or thoughts on this matter though. Also, past installation experiences would be nice so I know what to expect.
