Here in Boston where I'm located, NBC (channel 7 WHDH) is the only local network to have news at 4pm.

Though, KYW though is cancelling their 5PM newscast in favor of moving Dr. Phil there. WPVI 6 (the news leader) has Oprah at 4PM and will not move her. Oprah and Phil have a clause they will not allow stations air them at the same time.

KDKA channel 2 in Pittsburgh started carrying a 4 o'clock newscast awhile back.

Wow! 4pm EST news, that would be 3pmCST for people like me.

Is that really necessary now with digital multicasting, since a station can have their latest news running 24x7 on a subchannel?

I still don't understand why the big 3 (ABC CBS NBC) in Peoria all have to have 5pm news (followed by the National news at 5:30, then the traditional local 6pm news) meaning we get a 1.5 hrs of non-entertainment OTA. Usually I'm news'd out by 6:00pm.

Well, OK, I understand that the cost of an extra TV news production is probably cheaper (they already are paying the people) than syndication costs, and stations are trying to make a profit...

Channel 13 - CBS (Huntington) has been advertising on the radio that they are going to have news at 7 PM (EST). I know that channel 13 was having local news from 5 PM to 6:30 PM previously. Seems like a lot of time for news if they are still having local news as they had before from 5 PM to 6:30 PM as they had before.

Do you have a local WB or UPN station?

Most markets, the ABC, NBC, CBS do news at 5PM, and the FOX, UPN and WB air the off network syndicated shows.

In some markets where Fox is on VHF, NewsCorp Fox has launched evening newscast (or kept one, after some stations changed to Fox in 1995) to put a dent in the ABC, CBS, and NBC affiliate's local news.

One of the larger and exceptional market stations: The CBS in Detroit airs no newscast at all. Viacom slashed the newsdepartment in Detroit altogether.

Neither my UPN or FOX (WB is cable-only here) have decent reception since their transmition towers are in a different location, and run at much lower power than the other stations. (Once basketball season starts, I'll re-aim the antenna to get the UPN (go Illini!)

I also have D* so I only have another 100 choices for TV entertainment.

I just never fully understood the programming logic of the extra news casts. I remember when the NBC, WEEK, was the only 5:00 news. Aparantly the other stations saw their sucess, and have copied them, and they are now their fighting for a small share of the exact same audience, rather than attempting to get a new audience with alternate (non-news) programming.

I do not mind having local news at different times, as it provides a "time-shifting" opportunity to get news (i.e. our FOX does a 9:00 news that I've watched on another TV, but then by 10:00, I'll be watching something other than the traditional newscast!), but I do not care for ALL the stations to provide alternate newscasts at the same time! Oh well, there bigger problems in the world.

We have a 4:30 newscast on our local CBS affiliate. ABC and NBC start theirs at 5:00. Three locals have news at noon. Our local Fox has news at 9:00 and the others have their late news at 10:00.

I don't know how well the 4:30 p.m. news does in the ratings. It seems kinda early to me. I get home around 5:00, so I never watch it.

WKYC-TV 3 in Cleveland just started an 11AM Mon.-Fri. Newscast..moving it after many years of a noon newscast, followed at 11:30 by a Talk program, "Studio 3" with veteran host Fred Griffith Who until the last few years hosted the longtime (1972-late '90's) Morning Exchange 2-hour morning show on WEWS TV 5.

Around here, KELO (THE definite news, sports, weather, programming, syndicated programs, sign ons and sign offs, doppler radars, and informercials station) has their early newscast at 5:00 CDT. KSFY and KDLT don't offer early newscasts. KAUN (Pax) has their one (and only) newscast at 9:00. KTTW (Fox) does not even have a newscast!

I could include KCSD (PBS), but that is that McLehrer guy.

Here in Chattanooga NBC3 and ABC9 have local news at 5:00, 5:30, 6:00 and 11:00 pm, CBS12 has local news at 5:30, 6:00 and 11:00 pm, FOX61 which I can not receive a watchable picture ota here has local news at 4:00, 6:30 and 10:00 pm. Channel 61 here decided to have a 6:30 pm local news for those who get home too late for earlier local news programs on other stations and since FOX broadcast network has no national news they figure these people can get their National news on the many 24/7 news channels on cable tv or satellite. WB53 here does not even have a local news.

Paulh,

I lived in Peoria in the 50's (as a kid). I remember there were only 2 stations WTVH Channel 19 and WEEK Channel 43. I remember watching on January 1st 1958 when WMBD Channel 31 signed on the air.

Here in Denver two of the big 3 KCNC-CBS & KUSA - NBC have 4:00 P.M. news.

I actually like to watch the 9:00 news here on KWGN and KDVR (FOX). I also watch the early Fox news when I travel.

I always feel the people on the east and west cost are sleep deprived when you have to stay up for the 11:00 P.M. news. :)

If that is true it has changed since I lived there, the late new was on at 11pm on the Big 3 network stations when I lived in Orlando, FOX if I remember correctly was the only one with a 10pm news. :)

WKBW (ABC) in Buffalo starts its local news at 4PM and goes right up to 6:30 PM, thats 2.5 hours straight of local news. I think thats ridiculous. That station is big on locally produced stuff and Buffalo is a relatively small market in general.
