View Full Version : Wil the 6000 be enough for the new HD package?

I own the 6000 receiver and all the goodies you can stuff into it. A DISH rep told me that this will be all that I will need, now and into the future, to receive all of the new HD programming that will apparently start Sept. 16. But I've learned not to always believe everything DISH has told me. So I'm asking here, will my 6000 indeed be all that I will need, without having to upgrade to a superdish? If an upgrade is needed, I think there are going to be a lot of angry people who paid big dollars for the 6000, and had to put up with slim programming for almost two years.

6000 will get all from the temp 110 but you will have to get the superdish to get the new 105 programming when the sd is ava and hopefully the 6000 will get, as i have one myself.

Dish can only put so much on their existing satellites. You'll have to get a SuperDish if you want the programming that will be on the 105 satellite. But your 6000 should be able to use that SuperDish just fine.

Correct on both counts, except that you will have to either use a DishProPlus 4+4 switch (available next year) to connect your 6000 to a superdish, or use a DishPro Legacy Adaptor to connect your 6000 to a superdish. The superdish LNBs will be DishPro, so the 6000 will need the adaptor. I'm in the same boat with my 6000 as well, although I already have the adaptor connected between my DP34 switch and my 6000.

Thank you to everyone who responded to my question regarding the 6000 receiver. The answer you've all provided leads to the next question. Namely, how much more money am I going to have to shell out to receive every HD channel DISH will offer in the future?
My understanding is that I will have to eventually buy the superdish and a converter for my 6000 receiver. I don't know if prices for this equipment have been announced, but to the best of everyone's estimate, about how much money is the upgrade going to cost me? Needless to say, I (and no doubt a lot of other subscribers) am more than a little irritated at having to buy additional equipment when I was led to believe that the 6000 and dual-dish system was supposed to be adequate. Do you think DISH will compensate me for having to take down the two dishes and replace it with one? (I know I won't be compensated for the labor costs.) And do you think DISH will give me a price break since I will be forced to buy the converter for the 6000? Actually, I don't know why I'm even asking these questions. I'm pretty sure what the answers will be. One almost wonders if this wasn't a price scam to suck additional money from DISH customers.

If you commit to a year of TOP50 (or better) and the new HD package, you get the Superdish and the install for free. I expect this install will include any equipment required.

I agree with Ken - most likely there will be no charge with a year's programming commitment. If you end up having to pay for the adaptor, it'll cost you $70.

Mark,
What is the cost of the DishPro adaptor and where does this guy go. I currently have 4 recievers (501, 508, (2) 6000's) and I have a Quad LNB I purchased through Dish Depot.
If I order the Superdish down the road what extra's will I need and more inportantly,is it my responsibility to buy an expensive new switch or Dish's to get the Superdish to work??

Adaptor is $70 and I got mine from Dish Depot. It goes between the switch (or LNB) and the receiver. Right now we're speculating that the "professional installation" will include all of the necessary switches and accessories that will be required to make the superdish work with our systems. I've already asked my contacts at Dish about this, and will let you know what I find out.

Nothing?

This is a little off topic, but related. I have everything I need to subscribe to the HD package next week ( 6000, 8PSK). I get everything available today. If I subscribe next week, can I still get the Superdish install for free next month? I have the Everything package already and will subscribe to the new package for one year to use the savings associated with prepay.
My thinking is, I already have a month into my prepaid year. Will that hurt me with a commitment toward the Superdish. Maybe I should pay monthly (one month?) until I commit to the SuperDish offer.

When my wife and I bought our town house, it had a Dish300 system installed, with an extra dish pointing at 61.5 sat. We quickly upgraded that to a Dish500 Twin system (the one that has the built in switch so that you only have to run the connections from the dish to the receiver--is that a dishpro system? or is that something different...E*'s website confuses me). Currently, the 61.5 satellite isn't hooked up to anything, with the connections just hanging in our closet.
Next month, we're getting an HDTV, and if i get it before the end of the month, I was going to get in on the $199 6000 deal and get them to hook up the 61.5 sat too. They should do it for free since I can't get all of my locals on the Dish500 and can if I install the 61.5 sat. I assume they'll upgrade/whatever the 61.5 dish so that it'll work with the Dish500 if it doesn't already, which will leave me with this:
6000, 301, and the Dish500/61.5 satellite locations. This'll work, right? Am I missing something?

Charlie very clearly stated the the "free" SuperDish deal (with 1 year HD package) would be good through the end of January 2004 so no hurry

Jan 2004 will be here sooner than you think. I'd worry about waiting too long and having Winter weather keep installers off the roof in Jan it I prograstinated. Not that you'd have a snow problem in NM.

I beg to diffa! I am at 7000ft in the mountians and live 20 mins away from the best kept secret ski area in the USA. This is the "enchanted" portion of the land of Enchantment for sure. I have my Dish mounted where I can reach it with a broom to knock the snow off in Winter.

I wasn't able to watch Charlie Chat Monday night, as I work second shift, but my understanding from the replies here is that if I commit to one-year's worth of HD programming, I will receive the superdish (when it becomes available sometime in October) and installation for free, since I am an existing 6000 owner. Whether the 6000 converter is free as well apparently is not certain.
I called DISH technical support first today since I don't often get the most accurate info from the sales line. As I expected, the techies didn't really know anything about offers, only that the superdish would be necessary for expanding beyond channel 110.
My call to sales was more interesting. The lady I spoke with obviously did not view Charlie's program last night, and could only give me info on the HD service that had been passed on to her. She claimed that if you signed up for one year's HD service, the Enhanced Decoder module would be free to 6000 owners (not 6000U, since they wouldn't need it), but nothing was official concerning the superdish. She THOUGHT that existing 6000 owners would probably receive the superdish for free with commitment, but she couldn't confirm it.
Now, if the info Charlie gave last night is different from hers, then this is all moot. And of course, I'm quite happy over it. What this translates to, in my opinion, is that current 6000 owners are going to have to spend a little money for the system upgrade one way or another, but it's not going to break the bank. I'd like to gain everyone else's opinion on this. Thanks in advance for all input.

Charlie clearly stated that you could get the Superdish installed for free with a one years sub to the HD package. He even had a slide with that info printed on it.
I am planning on ordering the package and Superdish upgrade on 9/16
...6000, 301, and the Dish500/61.5 satellite locations. This'll work, right? Am I missing something? This is all you need for the current HD channels & the new ones starting 9/16.
At some point you will upgrade to Superdish to keep getting them and any new ones.
