I personally love my dish network service. I have the PVR 508 recorder and it has totally changed the way I watch tv. The picture quality is excellent and sound is as well. Especially if you have a surround sound system. The 510 has an optical output so the sound is crisp and clear. However, you will find some people on this board voice their opinions about dish and the problems they have had in the past. I personally have had no troubles with my service and the customer support has been excellent too. Give it a shot, I am glad I did! BTW, Watch Charlie chat tonight and check out the High Def special. Announcing their new High Def package including, ESPN-HD, HD-Net and others. Hope this helps. Give it a try!
Welcome to the board.
Dish is a good product insomuch as they are a service provider who concentrates on value for your money. If you have a simple installation with basic needs then this is the service for you.
If you are a huge consumer electronics person who focuses on every feature of the different products, and who uses the products to extreme then you may be disappointed. As an example if you just want to record a few shows on your PVR or pause live TV then the PVR 510 is more than adequate. If you want features such as different program folders, or more intelligent functions like the machine automatically spotting repeats and not recording them, then you may want to consider the DirecTivo unit.

Where do i watch Charlie chat at. The Dish Network Site
no, you can only watch charlie chat on one of the Dish network channels. you can go to a friends house who uses dish, or if you want just come to this board and log into our charlie chat life discussion. you won't actually see the chat in progress but you can see people's comments about it.

I have ben an E* sub since 96, I am not technically a sub at this time because of un-employment, however I have enjoyed my E* service ominously. Is it perfect ? NO, the D*Tivo is a better DVR with better interface and a little less bugy and has two tuners for watching a live program off of satellite wile recording another program on satellite or watching a recorded program wile recording two, the E*DVR510 only has one tuner which means you will need a 2nd satellite receiver to record while watching a 2nd show live on satellite. However if E* programing packages best meet your needs you should still be happy with E* and the E*DVR510. Once I am working steady again, I will re-activate my E* account, I hope to upgrade my old E* equipment to a E*DVR my self, their is a new E*DVR522 scheduled to be available around the November time frame that I hope to upgrade to if the price is wright, it not only has two tuners like the D*Tivo, but two outputs as well to provide independent viewing to two tv's without the extra receiver fee of $4.99. My reasons for staying loyal to E* is that my Chattanooga locals will likely be added before the first of the year and Chattanooga does not have a UPN station, with E* I can get this by adding the Superstation package to my locals for just an additional $3 per month, D* does not carry or plan on carrying my locals now or in the foreseeable future or does not have the Superstations, both DBS providers are better then cable in most places.

Dish Network is E* because it's parent company is Echostar Comunications, Direct TV is D* simply because it is short for Direct TV and to avoid confusion with digital tv which is abbreviated by DTV.

E* = Echostar (Dish Network)
D* = Directv

Well I just ordered. They are coming on oct 5, so so long. I tried on the site but when i went to confirm the order it took me back to the schedule date page, and then i did it from that page again and it didnt work still so i called them and they got it straight. The support seems good too because they guy i talked to was real nice.

Well I would not base the quality of support on sales support. The best way to judge support is how well they handle a technical issue and how well they handle the edge conditions. Are they responsive and do they have a sold way of esculating issues. Upfront customer support tends to always be good because the most important impression is the first.
My experience with E* service is that it handles some of the general stuff good but starts to falter as you hit the edge conditions. I would say they are a little above average in my experience.

We're here to cover the "edge conditions" as WeeJaveDude puts it. :D

At least Dish's csrs are from THIS COUNTRY!!!!
I waited on the phone for 15 minutes to get through to a Directv csr and when he came on he had such a foreign Pakistan accent I could barely understand him. I started to feel I was talking to Osama Bin Laden because I had such trouble nailing down when my service contract was up. He told me I had 4 more payments till my contract was up ; August, Sept, October, November. When I reminded him that August was last month and that would leave 3 months left, he thought and said"a-h-h-h-h-h yes you are right sir. "
Dish is never like this. I get the occassional spanish accent but I can understand that one. For the most Dish has excellent customer service and the wait time is under 5 minutes on their busiest days.
I perfer Dish over Directv which is why I will be cutting Directv off in Dec when my commitment is up. I only took them because of the free receivers and install and free NFL ticket games . I also wanted to see what I was missing for the couple of channels that Directv had that Dish didn't have.( TRIo and Oxygen, PBS kids) I found I wasn't missing anything and that Charlie was right that the same content was covered on the other Women's channels for Oxygen as well as the kiddie channels had Noggen . With Trio Dish had no equivalent and that was good since I saw nothing of any interest on this channel.
I have had Dish since 96 or 97 and I 've for the most part been very satisfied with them as a company , & I recommend them to all that will listen. Good product , good price on programs ,and very customer friendly. They have pioneered local into locals and have fought lawsuit after lawsuit to try to guarantee customers right to distant local service.
I even like old Charlie even when he is stubborn about getting new channels added to the service , but then again his cantakerous negotiating keeps the prices down for us all. :p

Sounds like you ll have to pay $5 a month New DVR fee for your 510...
The only way to avoid that charge is to upgrade to Everything package :) - in that case NO DVR Fee :)

The extra dish is for some of your minor local channels and not the Superstations, Superstions can be received on a standard Dish500.

Just be aware that the multi-sport channels are subject to a lot of blackouts. Mostly pro games, most college games should not be blacked out.

FWIW, if you decide to subscribe to NBA LP, you'll get NBA TV on channel 560 for no additional charge. It's a mirror of 402, except with no program info.
