View Full Version : Installer coming tomorrow - questions about my setup
I'm getting my Dish Network HD system installed tomorrow - a VIP 612 Dvr in the living room, and a VIP 211 receiver in the bedroom. I currently have a DirectTV install with a Zinwell WS68 multiswitch in my attic space supplying 2 RG-6 output cables to both the living room and bedroom. The multiswitch has two inputs from the DirectTV round dish. (SD only) I'm cancelling the DirectTV and plan to use the RG-6 output cables for the Dish install. (Cables have been fished through the interior walls from the attic already. I did indicate this in the "special install instuctions".)
I assume the Dish install will need a different multiswitch?
How many cables will run from the sat dish to the multiswitch for a HD install?
1 Cable will be needed for each receiver, no multiswitches will be needed the dish should have enough outputs. You can use the extra already run cable to bring in OTA signals.

For the typical Dish install of 2 - 3 receivers - you won't need ANY multiswitches - just cables from the LNB to the rooms involved. Usually any switching is done at the LNB itself.

Already have a drop for OTA hooked to my antenna. So I assume he'll run another cable from the attic space inside my wall to the receiver.

To clarify, you will have a multiswitch, but it's built in to the dish head assembly with the 3 LNBs and can feed 3 receivers including dual-tuners from a single line. Few setups now need an external switch.

the installer CAN use the existing wiring, assuming its RG6 an swept tested to a certain rating. AND assuming he wishes to mount the dish on the roof. he only needs 1 line from the dish to each receiver so the switch in the attic will need to go away an the cables coupled together, which he can do. again assuming that hes willing to mount on the roof. some installers wont.

Actually the installer can use a diplexer to combine the OTA and the satellite feeds into one cable and another diplexer at your receiver to split out the OTA and satellite.
Install went very well. When the installer arrived, I told him about my setup, all the cabling I already had for both locations and he was able to use my cables for the setup. He was actually happy he didn't have to run the cables himself. (He was even able to use the mast from my DirectTV SD dish to install my new Dish dish.) As someone mentioned earlier, he only needed one cable in each location.
From the time he arrived to the time he left, maybe an hour. Very pleasant experience from my point of view.
