View Full Version : How can I connect both Direct TV and Dish network to the same TV?

I have both Direct TV, and Dish network. I would like to have both systems connected to my big screen tv (using their respective recievers of course) without running another coax line to my TV. Do I combine the satellite signals at the dishes, and then split them back out again at the TV? What would I need to do to accomplish this? Thanks in advance for your help.
Both DISH and Directv use the same frequencies for their signal they also use control voltages for polarity selection, you can't have both on the same cable at the same time. Sorry you will have to run another cable from the dish or use just 1 service.
Do you use an A/V receiver to differentiate inputs to your TV (such as directing the input from your VCR? DVD player, etc.?) If so, choose an input that you do not use (hopefully there is one) and then choose between the two services by selecting the required input on the A/V receiver. For instance, my A/V receiver has inputs for 3 VCRS's. I use only one, so I have DirecTV (the service I use the least), use VCR 2, and the SAT/DBS input is used for DISH.
Should this not be a possibility for you, you can always buy a switcher (Sony has a nice one with both composite and S-Video ins/outs), and then just use the one cable to your TV, and switch inputs from the Sony.
Hope this helps. Doug

Doug, its not the connections to the TV inputs he's having problems with. Its the coax cables that go up to the dishes on the roof that he wants to combine.
Long Story short, can't do it. Run separate cables.

I have both services and a good vcr/dvd receiver. I have Dish hooked through the back or line 1 channel of the vcr with rca jacks and Directv through the Front of the vcr or line 2 channel of the vcr with rca jacks and from the vcr through a s-video cable to the tv. Most vcrs come with two line channels now and you can easily do this and hook cable to the vcr also. A vcr is nothing but a big tv tuner anyway.

Pete (PSB) - no you CAN'T use a diplexor here - diplexors are used for combining DBS and OTA OR CABLE - not combining 2 DBS LNB to receiver connections. The only way to do what the original poster wants is to run 2 coax cables, one for each Dish/receiver combination.
Back to the old drawing board : )
