should i stay with directv or join the dish network family? I am out of contract and going to call to "cancel" do see what thet counter with in order to keep me. going to get the $24.99 promo with a hd duo dvr one reg tv, and one hd. Going to agree to autopay so i can get free hd promo, so bill with taxes fees will be $34.99 per month, ?'s is what should i expect if i make the move
What do you mean exactly? You can expect 30 more HD nationals than Direct, no Fox RSN's, FX, Nat Geo, Disney HD or ABC Family HD. You can expect a fast, reliable DVR and better SD PQ. I'd get an OTA module in case the Fox dispute gets worse.
I dropped Direct for Dish a while back and am much happier.

I turned Directv off over a month ago and haven't missed it. If you're in a location that may be effected by the local station contract disputes then an ota might be some good advice if you can pick up your locals. Otherwise, if you get a western set-up (110-119-129) you might have AAD as an option.

Simply put, go with the channels you like. If DISH has them, go to DISH. If DIRECTV has them, stick with DIRECTV. Me, I'd stay with DIRECTV......

DISH will nickel & dime you to death. The worst customer service,EVER. And if you like sports-forget DISH. If you like losing channels and continual channel disputs, get DISH.

WRONG!! I have been with DISH for over 8 years and I have not been nickled or dimed! Also, their sats have not crashed in outerspace or has my dish fell of its mounting!
My customer service has been top notch. I have called to have a 722 and a 211 replaced, both replacements were here within 2 days. The time I need a tech to come out, he was out the very next morning.
Time to feed the troll!

And Directv's sats have crashed?

Tough news, DISH Network subscribers. The AMC-14 satellite that lifted off from Kazakhstan just hours ago failed to reach orbit.

Helpful post from a D* fanboy. lol
Dish is consistently rated the best customer service by two major independent services. I'd take this guys comments with a grain of salt , particularly as a DirecTV owner that feels the need to troll in a Dish forum.
What do you mean exactly? You can expect 30 more HD nationals than Direct, no Fox RSN's, FX, Nat Geo, Disney HD or ABC Family HD.The current dispute doesn't impact all Fox RSNs. There are several that are still up and running including FSNNW (partially owned by DIRECTV).
You could probably read just some of the thousands of posts and get an idea.
I am a very long time continuous Dish subscriber, longer than most on the forums, going on 15 years. (Before there even was such a thing as local channels on the small dish) So that alone should tell you what I think. But being honest and hopefully helpful there are a couple of things to consider.
1. I rarely suggest changing providers if you are happy with your current service. If you just chase the best deal you may not in the end get the service you are happiest with.
2. I do think Dish is a little over the top with DVR and other fees now. I think it makes it a little confusing when comparing prices. But in the end, the final cost (which I suppose is what counts) is usually less than or equal to Direct, and most times less than Cable.
3. Sports on Direct has been well documented as being overall better. I am not sure if it is still true, but Dish for movie watchers has been better. One of the best values has been the Encore movie pack that comes with the top 250. (Or whatever they call that tier now) And they generally carried )or carry) more of each premium services channels.
4. I support Dish in most all the fights they have had with programmers. We better hope Dish and other affected providers do not give in to the current round of price hikes, or your monthly cost is going to skyrocket. That said, history says you will temporarily lose some channels from time to time more often with Dish.
5. No receiver is perfect. But I really like the Dish receivers, have virtually no problems with my two VIP612 models or really any of previous receivers from the 2800, to 301, and now VIP612. Only the 508 models had some issues, not bad but I did replace both of them twice over the years I had them. But when they worked they worked well. They have had some clunkers in the past that I did not own.
6. In the many years I have rarely lost signals for any length of time. I would say Direct has the same reliability.
7. My recent dealings in upgrading and helping a neighbor get Dish tells me their CS is indeed better than it may have been in the past. You can't go by installers as they will vary with either service. Mine for my upgrade, and the one who came for my neighbor were top notch. Mine was extremely helpful to insure I kept 110/119 even though Dish only wanted the Eastern ARC, as I get NPS distants on 110/119.

Look at the channels being offered by both (a link to one comparison chart is in my signature and James Long has a great one as well) and consider how much each provider would cost you.

Really depends on the channels you want. Mulitsports package with Direct is better(before and after the price battle), it doesn't include the NFL Redzone though, but the RSN support is much better. All other sports packages with Direct do a lot more than Nickel and Dime you, they Ben Franklin you to death with them. Equipment wise, Dish hands down, we compare with my Brother in law, all the time. Dish does has 25 or so more National HD Channels, even with the current disputes with ABC Family.
Not all channels are HD, and Dish's SD support is night and day superior over Direct.
Disputes happen, and with the harder times they happen even over at Direct, see VS's. Charlie is always up for a fight over price increases. Nobody has any idea how Direct will handle other price increases as they come along. Now that money is tighter for Direct, they played hardball with VS, just like Dish plays hardball everytime. Disputes are happening with all sorts of carriers right now just read the news.
Support over all has been great with Dish. Did have a upgrade issue that drove me crazy back in 06, it all worked out that has been the low point. High point with Dish support. Dish called me to inform me that I had a signal issue, and needed to come out and replace my 1000.2, I had no idea was even having a problem, and Dish fixed it before it became an issue. Talk about proactive support.

At least try and be accurate and have your facts straight. I recently left U-verse for Comcast. Haven't had D since 2005. Again, DISH has the worst customer service of all the television providers and I've had them all. Probably would still be with DISH if not for their dropping of channels and lousy service.

Questions you should be asking yourself. Am I "totally" satisfied with my current provider? Which of the two provides the best HD and 3D for "my" viewing habits? Which of the two better privides the national channels I'm interested in? Which of the two better provides the movie channels I'm interested in? Which of the two better provides the sports channels I'm interested in? Will I be able to keep my local channels if I switch? Which of the two have the extra features I'm interested in? And most importantly what will my comitment be if I switch? The more informed you are the easier your decision will be.

What? The only one I am aware of is the American Customer Satisfaction Index. DirecTV was #1 for years and I believe Dish Network was #1 this year. Are there others? What other polls? We already know which provider has more HD channels, which provider has more customers, which provider is the more successful business. SaltiDawg said to read the polls. Which polls?

You really left U-verse? WOW!!! Did it go out for 12 hours?
Hi Paul. No,it didn't go out. I dumped U-verse for several reasons. The main reason was the limit of only 2 HD streams. When you have 3 people wanting to watch HD and also record something at the same time, you're out of luck. Some U subs are now getting 3 streams , but even that isn't enough. My area was still 2. The HD PQ left something to be desired. And I wanted a service that has MLB Network and MLB EI. U also lost Hallmark which would not have made my wife happy, although I left before U lost the 2 Hallmark channels.

Dish will nickel and dime you (ESPECIALLY if you have multiple DVRs). Direct will pilfer your wallet after the intro promotion is over.
You really have to see what channels you love/can't live without, which channels you would like to have, and which channels you could care less about... and then see where those channels fall in the packages and see what is the best price.
I've heard horror AND love stories re: Dish customer service... same thing with Direct.
Me? I've been a customer of both and I personally like Dish better. ...never had something 'bad' with Direct but the channels we watch are in packages that cost less with Dish (after the promo stuff is over and you're paying the 'real' price.)
