Just a heads up. Whenever you update your credit card info with dish online, if you have an outstanding balance, you will be charged the balance at that time. I received a new credit card as mine was expiring at the end of the month. I went and updated the credit card info on my dish acct as i knew the bill was due Nov 15th (i'm on autopay) and i didnt want it to be rejected due to an expired credit card. I then checked my email and had 2 from dish. One for updating my card and one for making a payment. I got on dish and did a chat to get my credit card credited and told the nice lady that i hadnt made a payment, only updated my credit card info and she said (from the chat )
(03) HY1 Joyce M.ZE5: When ever you update a card information on your records and if there is an amount due on your account, your card will be charged.
She did credit my card, but if i didnt get the email about the payment i wouldnt have known. Also, dish maybe would have charged me again on the 15th with autopay? So if you need to update your credit card info, you might want to do it the day before your bill is due.:)
Hope this helps others.

that is very common place. I know when I updated my cc on file I had to pay my Sprint and Qwest bill that day. Most companies for auto cc to kick in MUST have a zero balance. When I worked at AT&T in business receivables it was the same way.

Yes, stupid isn't it! If you call them up, you can read them the number over the phone and they won't charge you until your billing date. Or at least I was able to.

Something similar happened to me except I did the update over the phone with a live person. I ended up with 2 payments one day apart, one on the old card number the other on the new card number (it was the same account just with a different card number thanks to the bank wanting to change the number). I did not realize that the double charge was made until I got my statement. By that time another payment was due to E*, but my account balance was "0" due tot he double payment. So E* got their payment for Sept. one month in advance of the month it normally would have been taken.

Isn't deregulation wonderful.
Sure, we don't need any government involvement with banks and credit card companies because, you know, they will only do what is good for us

Can't agree with that. I'll take dealing with the bank, dish, or other companies over dealing with intruding Government regulations. Example? The new credit card laws have made my fees rise dramatically. I had overdraft protection FOR FREE, as long as I had money in another account to cover the checking account, or up to three times a year even if there was not another account. Now? $25 anytime I go over, all because of Government regulation. I could site many many more examples......
While CS is not always good, I have better luck trying to fix a mistake or get an answer with a private company over any Government agency such as water utilities..... If you think the Government does what is good for us you are very sadly mistaken, unfortunately it is more by mistake than planned when it turns out good for us!

So you think that making sure that banks and credit card companies can't screw us over means you would have to deal with a federal agency??
NO. It just means that every bank and card company would have to play by the same rules

But it does mean that those rules have to be written so they can't find any friggin loop holes in them

What does your response have to do with the original post?
Credit card company reported that I had used my card at a possibly compromised location and issued a new card, saying the current one would expire 7 days after mailing (NO postmark or date on the letter!). I entered the new CC number at over a dozen accounts and the only place I had to pay was DISH. Amazon type companies didn't have any balance. CSR said Autopay would happen on 13th, and it did, but didn't post to the credit card until the 16th - same date as the one time charge that went to the new card number.
Transaction Date Posting Date Description Promotional Offer ID1 Reference Number Amount
10/13/2010 10/16/2010 AUTOPAY/DISH NTWK - 800-894-9131 CO -- 7784 $31.32
10/14/2010 10/16/2010 DISH NETWORK-ONE TIME - 800-894-9131 CO MAIL/PHONE -- 4073 $31.32
At least I've got a credit for the next bill. :(
This tread illustrates a good reason not to use CC autopay. Dish sends me an email reminder when a payment is due, and I pay them using Web Billpay. I like being in full control.
