View Full Version : Anyone else seeing locals highly compressed?
In the past week I've noticed that the locals have so much artifacting that it's distracting. And this is watching it from a 20 inch tv! I think Dish has put way too many locals on their main satellites and it sucks for us, but will make them more money. Quantity over quality i guess, but what choice do we have.. cable? ha yeah right.

Boston locals look fine here on a big screen projection TV.

The Houston locals got kind of crappy when they added that mexican channel. It makes no sense either: they added just ONE spanish channel and it's a Univision affiliate! If someone was serious about spanish locals they'd have a 148 dish anyway or would watch Univision junk off of the national channel.

Mine look REALLY good - maybe not quite broadcast quality (on the good ones), but pretty close.

I am visiting my inlaws in KC, MO. I am SHOCKED at the PQ on all locals. JUST GOD AWFUL. It looks like I could be watching video off the internet. All other channels look good, its just the locals.
I have Dish locals back home in NM, they look day and night better than this. Of course we HAVE no other cities in our spot beam probably to compete for transmission space!

I thought mine were fine, but I realized just how low the bit-ceiling was when watching "Cops" last night. Whenever there were flashing lights (which is most of the show) the picture couldn't keep up with the changes. The picture broke into a mosaique of blocks.
See ya

I was watching a football game yesterday on DishNet's NY networks. It was terrible, lots of blocks on all running plays. My locals in San Francisco look just fine as does Los Angeles.

I'm watching NYC Locals and I agree it is horrible when there's motion. The blocking I see makes it look like painting. You would think a major city like this where other cities can get the locals would be of high quality but Dish must be playing with his transponders on 119. I hope it's temporary because this makes cable look good.
I get the LA locals and they look bad. I have no other
way to get them other then
satellite, no cable and a big
mountain range blocks OTA.
I wish they could improve the PQ but I don't see it as
a priority for them.
I watched the Redskins/Falcons game from Atlanta WAGA on Dish and PQ sucked the big one!
I've seen the same thing here in the metro Detroit area. Watched the Michigan-Notre Dame game and it had tons of blocks.

Ditto for Denver. Remarked on the pixellation during the football game just this afternoon. And that was when they were just interviewing the coach!
Terrible on NY locals as well. Lots of blocking on the locals even the patriots game looked bad on CBS. Come on Dish get it together.

Anchorage locals look awful compared to cable.
Roanoke, VA locals vary. Sometimes, they look pretty good, but I have definitely seen times when some of them looked quite bad (and I was able to compare with cable on the spot). I guess they are always moving and adding channels, so it will change from time to time. They need to keep the compression under control, though, or risk losing local package subscriptions.
Washington DC locals just suck eggs! My XBR shows too much detail for almost all the SD channels anyway. Cannot wait for HD
I was excited a couple of years ago going from OTA to satallite
locals, but noticed and still notice smearing on facial close-ups.
I do not notice this on SA but is throughout the channels on E*.

Yes I have checked many Locals. Many are bad.
But ESPN is perfect.
I bet they has to do something to get those HDTV channels up on the mains.
It should get better once Super Dish is out.
I think locals are being treated like Shopping Channels in terms of bandwidth. It's a shame.

Yeah, Roanoke locals PQ vary quite a bit. PBS15 has had a lot of problems, UPN24 has been consistently terrible, but it doesn't seem to be due to compression. Others have had their good and bad days, though, surprisingly WB5 has been great when I've watched. Does anyone know where the E* POP for Roanoke is? I know the D* POP is at the WDBJ "digital broadcast center."

Not at all, shopping channels look 5 times better than the locals. It is a shame.

Well let's just HOPE that when the HD is cleared off of 110 that E* will shuffle some channels around to improve PQ. I'm sure that the CONUS slots could be rearranged to improve quality a little. As for the spot beams I don't know. They wouldn't want to have all but one local on the city's beam.

As for the Houston locals, it got a little worse when the mexican local was added but they're still pretty good. Network TV and local news is pretty good. I don't watch sports but I have seen some glimpses that were pretty bad.
