This weekend I bid farewell to Dish. Somehow my SW-64 went bad and this started everything rolling downhill.

Last December I enrolled (or at least requested to enroll) in the $1.99 warranty. Somehow this never was added to my account. Then on this past Friday I completely lost all signal. I called tech services and we narrowed it down to two possibilities: the dish was moved or the switch went bad.

I verfied that the signal has not moved and is pointed in the correct direction. They told me that I would need to take my SW-64 to a local retailer for them to verify that my switch was bad. I could then send it in to them and they would send a replacement for $129. Since I am in Philly area I could have awaited for a second dish install for the locals where they would have supplied the equipment and new switch but this wouldn't be for weeks. To get a service technician at to my house would also take 2 weeks and cost $99.

While I could replace the switch myself the replacement would arrive while I am out of town for a week and my wife could not do the install. This along with the fact that they tried charging me got me really upset.

American Satellite was offering some good deals on DirecTV and for the channels that I watch I should be saving $5/month. For $179 including shipping I can get a Triple LNB dish, an HDVR2, 2 HBH-SA receivers, 3 room install and shipping. I signed up and called Dish to cancel.

Dish then said that despite the fact that they had no record of my warranty request they would supply the $129 switch for free and offer me a free month of programming. I told that it was a nice offer but they should have done that a lot sooner since I already made another deal.

Wouldn't you see it on your bill if you are were enrolled in the warranty program? Plus, I am pretty sure you can always cancel a new order for directv once it is put in. Not saying it was a bad move to move to go to directv or anything, but it seems you have no reason to blame dish network (unless they don't put the monthly warranty charge on your bill). It seems like they did what they needed to do to keep you.

Sounds like switching was your only option.

Congratulations as a DISH & Directv dealer I think you made the right decision. I switched in July on my personal subscrition and I like the TIVO DVR much better than the DVR 501 & 508 I had from DISH. So far customer service has been much nicer with Directv except for one connection to India.
