View Full Version : DHP customers and SuperDish upgrade
OK, here's something that we might want to get answered now vs. waiting. In this thread http://www.dbstalk.com/showthread.php?t=18698 we find out that Digital Home Plan customers are not able to get the Dish 6K $199 special. Now this limitation wasn't mentioned anywhere in the Charlie Chat and wasn't a line item on the slide that showed the pricing and requirements.
Now the same thing might happen with DHP users when they call in to upgrade to SuperDish. So DHP users would be soaked for the $299 price of the dish and new switches, if needed. Can someone that has knowledgable sources at Dish try to get an answer to this now so we're not surprised when we call into order the upgrade. Thanks - Rick

Because of everything I've heard with the DHP's getting shafted on these upgrades, it makes me even more glad that I'm in the process of getting out of the DHP. I've got a bad feeling the Superdish upgrade will overlook DHP's just as the 6000 upgrade has.

How are you getting out of DHP?
I'm guessing buying units, either from Dish for probably the brand new 'sucker' price [even though the units are no longer new, and may even have been refurbished], or from 3rd parties [ebay anyone?], sending back the leased ones if necessary, and telling them you want to change your plan? Does that work? Or is it more of a PITA?

The Superdish may be treated differently due to the locals question as people will need access to the other satellites which have the secondary local channels. Otherwise they will run afoul of the NAB and FCC (They had free 61.5 and 148 installs for this problem about 18 months ago)

dt, I bought a new 721 for a fantastic price, and just bought a used 301. So yes, I am buying my way out of DHP, but I feel I will make out better in the long run. I was tired of paying a $10 monthly fee for having my 501 with AT 150 on the DHP.

So did they charge your for your dish or switch? Just wondering, as I have
a 501 and two 301's on the DHP, and would like to get out as well.

DHP does NOT cost ANY more than $5 per month more than an equivelent regular non leased account. The $5 is the warranty and rental fee. This is actually beneficial to you because all rented AND (I'm pretty sure) non-rented equipment you have hooked up is covered under this extended warranty.

Mike, this has been discussed before, and I don't know why everyone argues the point, but if you have a 501 with DHP and are a AT150 customer, the charge is $10.
It is written right on the second page of my bill, as well as the contract when I first signed up over 2 years ago.
Lidless, I will let you know if they say anything about the LNB (I have a legacy quad) when I finally take my last 301 receiver off the account next week. I'm just waiting for the replacement I bought to be sent to me. I'm hoping that I don't have to pony up for that as well. If they say I have to purchase that as well to get completely off of DHP, I'll just call a week before superdish is going to come out, and tell them I'm sending it back.
angiodan that $10 fee changed when they changed to the upgrade to a 50X for $50. It is no longer the case I don't pay $10 I can tell you that for sure. All I pay is the $5/month DHP fee which covers warranty and rental.
Why can't they let DHP customers ever buy equipment at the same promotion price of everyone else. I don't even care about renting a 6000u, why cant I buy? Combine this along with the $149 - 508 promotion I couldn't take advantage of and I really have about had it.
Don't they get it... I may want to buy equipment. I don't want to be forced to have 301s and only one PVR I rather upgrade all my boxes to 508s but it is cost prohibitive because I have to pay full price for all of them. Why is it DHP customers get short end of the stick all the time? What is the reasoning? The fact that I have no investment in equipment makes leaving Dish that much easier. If I owned any equipment I may think less about leaving.

They are still doing free 61.5 installs. My sister just ordered Atlanta locals and they offered her a free 61.5 dish with install last week.

Well, then why have I been paying $62.99 for AT150 with 3 receivers.
New Monthly Charge(s) Service from: 08/09 to 09/08
NETWORK PACKAGE WITH PBS 11.99

So if AT150 is 42.99 and 2 additional receivers 10.00,
thats 52.99, plus $10 for the DHP PVR plan!
And I did pay the $50 upgrade to get a 501 when I first signed up.
So if you are only paying $5 with a pvr, more power to you.

angiodian, you got some kind of funky deal or maybe an old promotion. We got DHP late last year and last month paid $99 to get a 501 rented. (they would not send it to us for $49 self install even though the previous CSR said so. shoulda tried CSR roulette but didn't feel like it.)
So, in your case, it may be beneficial to get rid of DHP. You're paying $5 extra a month for some kind of funky PVR fee and the $5 warranty/rental.
(But it looks like you could just refer 2 more people to Club Dish and make up for it :) )

angiodan,
I agree with rtt2. I signed up just over a year ago with the $50 508 and an extra 301. I only pay $5 extra for DHP.
I even called Dish to a get breakdown of my Bill. Just call them and they can tell you what your bill is composed of.

Even better, why can't they let DHP's upgrade their current equipment via a new lease deal? I would GLADLY pay for the upgrade in equipment from the 501 to the 6000 for HD as well as pay for HD itself and I would probably subscribe to HBO. Why to HBO, to get the HBO HD feed as well. Dish is being penny wise and dollar foolish. Previously, I wouldn't even think of switching to D* as my cable co. stinks for content, now I'm am seriously considering it and telling Charlie to come get his crap off my roof.
I just called Dish and they are sending me 2 boxes for the 3900 and 2800 i've had sitting on my shelf, then they'll take me off DHP. Didn't know i could do that...

I think I'm going to try and do the same. My three year price protection guarantee ran out in June, and the $5 savings from the extra receiver and $2 extended warranty coverage made it worth it to me to pay $3 as cheap insurance to have spare receivers in case one of my three PVRs went down. But since it will be excluding me from other offers it is time to send them back I guess.
I'm calling them now.

OK, here's the deal.....
I call the CSR and he says the only way he can take me off the Digital Home Plan (He says Digital Dynamite IS the same as a Digital Home Plan so all of you DD folks are also 2nd class citizens now) is to cancel my account and set me up again as a new one. I tell him I don't like this idea as I have four waivers for distant networks in two cities and I don't want to risk losing them which he acknowledged would probably happen if we closed the old account.
I also ask about the 510 upgrade plan as I have two dishplayers I want to get rid of as they won't work with the Superdish in a few months. He says that as a DHP designee they will cost me $299 plus shipping. <Raspberry>
I say that I spend A LOT on programming a month, and that they are making D* look more and more attractive and he says to hold on for a second, as he may have an idea...
He comes back five minutes later and said they will send me two boxes to return my old receivers. After I return them, I am supposed to wait a few days and call and they will remove the DHP status from my account and replace it with a standard status.
Which is what I wanted in the first place......
I don't know if my high roller status (I pay $164 a month) held any sway, or whether it was the fact that I have been a subscriber for 3.5 years and they felt they made their money on the 4900 and 2700 they leased me, and can let me change the status on the account.
Regardless, be persistant and try and get the same deal (especially if your original leased receivers are gathering dust on a shelf like mine) .

Bob,
Just curious. Which boxes are the sending you to replace the ones you have. I question whether they can just change the status on your account. I thought is was a software/system limitation on their part. That is why a new account had to be set up.
Let us know the results.

Evidently they can as that is what he told me they would specifically do.
They are only sending me boxes with RA stickers so my account is modified to show that I don't have any leased equipment anymore. I guess there IS some way to get around the software limitation, but I don't kow how they are doing it (it may keep the CSR drones from being able to modify the account but there may be some supervisor level software that will enable it. I will keep you all informed a it will probably take about 10 days to get all of this to go through.
I plan on upgrading to two 510s to replace my Dishplayers as they won't work with SuperDuperdish. Since the Dishplayers still ave a fairly high resale value I will sell them to help finance the new receivers (no monthly DVR fees for me due to AEP). I hear rumors that weather and games will be going away on the DP soon.

Did they want the LNBF back as well? I remember when I signed the DHP contract they said they wanted it back and I wonder if the software will still show equipment being out until its returned.

A DP (or other old receiver) would work with the Superdish as long as it had some kind of 'legacy converter', no?

No I specifically asked that question and they said they only needed the receivers back (they didn't even specify the remotes but I will include them also.)

I don't think so. On one of the recent chats they said that the DP was one of the "older" receivers that would not be compatible.

When I called to see what it would take to get out of DHP I was told the receiver and the LNB's (not the dish) would need to be returned.

The dishplayer remotes are not compatible with the other Dish receivers anyways so that is probably why they did not care if they got those back or not.
I thought all a person had to do to get setup under a regular account instead of DHP was to go out and buy the receivers that you want, activate those that you bought, then ship the ones you leased back to them.

I was told that the DHP account get's cancelled/closed out, and they open a completly new account. So make sure that you do this on the last day of your billing cycle since Dish doesn't refund prorated balances in a cancelled account.

An update, I just turned off my last 301 that was part of DHP. The CSR said as soon as they recieve it, I am no longer a DHP customer, and at that time I could sign up for the $1.99/mo warranty if I want.
OK Dish, give me the big deal on that 921!!!
As Bob said, no mention of the LNB. My guess is if you were cancelling outright, they would want it back.

I wonder if someone has nixed my getting out of the plan. I'll keep you all informed....
