With all the upcomming new hardware and the superdish issue, we are somewhat confused as to what we should/need to do in the coming months. So I would appreciate any advice you all can give us.

Currently have a 7100DP as the main receiver and a 2700 in the bedroom. We do use the Webtv function as a backup to the PC. We get that free as we use Msn internet access.

Locals should be available by the end of the year, requiring a superdish. May or may not take advantage of that, depends on the stations offered.

Currently have AT150, Showtime, Superstations

What we would like to do is change the 2800 to a Pvr as cheaply as possible. Dont do alot of recording, but some on a VCR at this point.

Not really into HD at this point, probably wont till the prices drop considerably.

So in order to get into a position to accept locals, obviously we will have to get the superdish. So what DVR deal would you recommed we get? Thanks for any advice.

Jackie, do you work for Comcast or something? Since you don't
do a lot of recording, you won't need a PVR; your VCR is fine! Okay, if you really want locals (99% of us do), and you are a current subscriber, wait a while until dish offers special Superdish deals w/PVR (if and when). I'd call them and ask directly about a possible future "package" deal. I suspect before the end of the year, Dish will have attractive incentives to coax most of us over to Superdish (and possibly PVR).

I don't think many of us ever did much recording with a VCR, I know I didn't. It's a much different story when you have a PVR though.

The amount of recording that I did increased when I got my DVR. With over 50 timers and ~35 hours of storage space, I could set up all of my programs on the PVR even if I expect to be home. That way, I don't slap myself on the head saying "Dangit, I forgot about show."

Just how timers does your VCR have and how much storage space?

Yeah, other than 1 or 2 shows, I always was too busy to mess around with changing tapes. With the PVR I rarely watch live TV anymore. (Even football.... I start recording it and don't start watching the game until 10:30. Then I skip commercials and some dead spots between plays (that 45 second play clock works GREAT with a 30 second skip) and catch up by the end of the game. BTW, make sure you pad the timer for the game for 90 minutes to catch OT or even regular games which NEVER end when the guide says they will.

PVRs will change the way you watch TV. Appointment TV is a pain in the arse.

I suppose they will have a deal out there in the future, they usually do. But I think if I do get the superdish, I will have to dump my 2700 anyway, so I will have to do something.

With all the problems the DP had, we never saw any reason to add to the troubles we have/had with it.

We sort of delayed this decision because of all the changes going on with hardware. Waiting for things to settle down and get the best option.

I dont doubt we will do more recording either.

I sold my Dish Player on E-bay and it bought my 508.

I think the 508 is a great unit. Plenty of record time at 50 hrs and a guide that has a week to 10 days of information in it. RF remote. It is a really nice unit for SD. The biggest complaint I have with the 301 is the amount of Guide info. I understand the new software increases that but from my perspective the 301 is a watch it when its on machine. I don't take TV guide and typically don't look at the newspaper for my show info. I use the guide on the system.
