I was reading about Sony Blu Ray players on their website. They keep referencing connecting the player to a Bravia TV. Is it required to connect a Sony Blu Ray player to a Bravia tv to stream Net Flix, Amazon VOD etc. I have a Samsung PN 50C550 Plasma.

No, not at all. It will need an Internet connection of some kind, of course, but it will work with ANY TV.

As stated, that is just Sony trying to get you to buy their tv.
If you are really interested in Netflix and Hulu I would buy a lesser priced BluRay player and get a Roku. The Netflix and Hulu interfaces on both my Sony and Vizio boxes are really bad. Controls are at best backwards. No search function on the Sony and fast forward and rewind are hopelessly broken.
Honestly, an Apple TV or Roku box (I have both. Prefer A-TV for Netflix) are both far better choices and depending on what you buy could even be cheaper.

I love our Roku, and an HD one can be had for only $59 nowadays. (We also have a standalone Sony Blu-ray player and a 400 disc Sony Blu-ray changer, each with no Internet streaming.)
