View Full Version : Question about the 811
I have decided to pass pass on the 6000 and wait on the 811. Will it work with the current Dish 500 antennas or will the superdish be required. I am also considering waiting a bit longer before getting dish's hd package. I only want to use the 811 as an ota receiver for now.
I have thought about just getting an ota receiver but it makes no sense if the 811 will work without the superdish. I know i will be getting dish's hd programming at some point so I will need it.
I would think it work as an ota receiver and still pick up my regular programming without the need for the superdish. However, the way dish is rolling out hd, it would not suprise me if the 811 only worked with the superdish.
Anyone know for sure. Thanks.

It will likely work just fine with your Dish500. I don't think that SuperDish will be required, but since it will be free for a commitment, I bet that you'll get it anyway. :D
Still, I'd expect that you would be able to use the 811 for OTA and not subscribe to the HD package. With a SuperDish you'd be able to occasionally get the HDEvent or PPV movies. Maybe HBO if you subscribe to it.
The 6000 allows you to view your OTA programming and not subscribe to any HD material. You can view the other Dish SD programming just fine with the 6000 too. I don't expect this behavior to change with the 811. But since nobody has had their hands on one, its still just speculation for now.

Yes, the 811 WILL work with your Dish 500. As a matter of fact, all of the new Dish receivers will work with legacy switches and LNB's. The only problem is that if you do want Dish HD in the future, you may have to pay for the Superdish since you will miss out on the promotion.
If you are willing to commit another year to Dish, I would recommend going ahead and getting the Superdish now so you won't be paying for it later.
you are right. i probably will go ahead and get the hd programming. i am just getting a little antsy right now. football is my number one reason for wanting hd. knowing that i could get Monday night football and a cbs college game ota for free right now is killing me.
i am also the type of person that weighs the pros and cons of everthing before i make a decision. so there is a serious tug of war going on in my head right now.
my out of control football mind is telling me i cant wait for the 811. that i should just shell out the bucks for an ota receiver so i can watch some hd football this weekend.
my reasonable mind is saying why would you pay for a receiver that only does ota when a receiver that does ota and satellite is coming out in a few weeks.
what to do?

With regard to the 811's capability, I believe it can export both SD and HD simultaneously. If this is the case, could it then be set up to have the SD signal go to a TiVo unit, and the HD signal go to the television? I know TiVo does not have an HDTV-capable unit yet, so under this scenario, HDTV would only be available "live," but the show would still be available on TiVo as SD. I assume this would also obviate any need to be switching between HD and SD inputs on the DISH receiver?

Just a point of info.
From the TiVo forum I am told that the HD TiVos will support only Directv and OTA HD recording. You will not be able to record HD signals from Dish or Cable on TiVo. See TiVo Cummunity Forum for details.

Okay, thanks. I was hoping the SD signal would be availalbe to the TiVo, even though it will not take the HD from DISH. BTW, is there an HD TiVo available?

Again I am getting this info from the TiVo Community Forum -
There is currently no HD TiVo available, but Betas are being tested. As was previously noted the HD TiVos will record HD only from Directv or OTA.
FWIW, Charlie stated that they won't be shipping the 811s W/O SuperDish for starters.
