Just got my 6000, and relatively new to the board, so this question may have been discussed.
Does the fan on 8VSB module always run? Mine seems to always be on, even if the unit has been off for hours.
It is slightly annoying.
Is there anything easy, I can do to quiet the fan? I do not want to disable it or viod the warrenty.
Thanks.

Yes, the fan always runs. About the only thing you can do without voiding the warranty is placing the receiver inside of a cabinet.
When I had my 6000, the fan was a little noisy but not all that bad. Most of the time I never heard it.

Its sorta like living next to a railroad track. You get used to it!
Actually mine was noisey at first but has now settled down and the loudest noise actually comes from the low whine of the drives on the PVR's

Does it have to run all the time ?

I haven't heard the fan in my 6000 for more than 6 months now...of course that's because the fan died 6 months ago...still works though!
It appears obvious that there must be some differences in 8VSB fans. I took advantage of the 6000 promotion last week and received and installed my 8VSB yesterday. I have to get within two feet of the receiver to hear the fan.

As soon as I get my $9 8VSB module I'll attempt to unplug the fan.

Cyclone, if you also have the 8psk mod, DO NOT unplug the fan. Both modules installed create a tremendous amount of heat and your 6000 will start acting up.

I have had 8PSK and 8VSB running since Discovery was added in August 2002 with no problems whatsoever without a fan.

I'll likely leave the fan on for a while. My 6000 sits on its side now behind my plasma. It can get a little warm back there now. :D
Besides, the sooner my 6000 cooks, the sooner I will have to get that 811 or 921. :D
