View Full Version : Using 1 reciever to distribute over rg59?
Ok, here's my problem, I live in an apartment where rewiring and stuff is a no-no. Assuming I can get RG6 to the main tv, we'd like to have some cable in another room, but they won't ever be used at the same time. I was wondering if I could (with a directTivo) have it hooked to the main tv (component or s-video) and then also output to the rg59 jack on the wall to send it to the other room through the already wired cable (the cable is not connected to the cable system) thoughts?

It might be possible. Do you have access to the cable or are you just planning on connecting to the wall plate in each room? If you are just planning on connecting and expect it to work you might be dissappointed. If they disconnected the cable you might not be connected to the other rooms or you might be feeding backward through splitters or taps.
Anyone know what kinda resistance would be too much? if so I can hook up a cable to each wall outlet and bust out my multimeter....

The easiest thing to do is just try it. With some luck, it will probably just work and give you a watchable, if somewhat fuzzy picture.
If it doesn't well, you have spent any money yet.
It might work, but probably not, depending on how they wired your building.
If they had cable in mind when it was wired, assume that your apartment is cabled separately from your neighbors, so they can disconnect you if you don't pay for cable.
It is doubtful that the cable drops in your place are home runs (both leading out to the cable company tap). More likely, there is a single cable to your apartment, which is then split once or twice to feed the drops. With splitters(or taps) the signal can go from the input to either output(and vice versa) as expected, but won't go from one output to the other output on the splitter. Try it.
If you can open up the receptacle box and find a splitter or tap, then you can reconfigure the cable connections to feed the signal from the LR to the BR, IF they ran a cable between the two locations. If the cable in the LR and BR is fed from say, the kitchen, then you will have to splice the cable there to get the signal over to the BR.
Hopefully, your splitters aren't in an inaccessible area, like an attic.
Just as an update, I tried it and it works, played a tape in my vcr into the jack in the living room and watched it on the tv in the bedroom. So then I thought, hey I could put a second reciever in the bedroom and run the signal through that (maybe). I tried it, only got about a 1 pt loss in signal 50ft rg6 to wall in living room 50ft rg6 out of wall in bedroom, tested using same reciever.
