View Full Version : How did I ever survive without a PVR?

Well my E* system was installed yesterday. They installed a 510, 311, 2 dishes, and a 3x4 switch. Some of my local channels (and a few interesting russian channels) are on the 148 bird.

I love my PVR, it's only 24 hours old but I don't know why I waited so long to get one. I had D* for about 18 months and they wouldn't give me any deals on their Tivo system so I decided to give E* a shot. Pausing live TV is great, no more mad dashes to the bathroom. :D

I do have one question. I recorded a movie this morning and when I played it back this afternoon I noticed blue and red noise on the right edge of the screen. It was only on the very edge of the picture and was not there all of the time.

Is this something I need to worry about? or am I being picky?

Thanks,
Tim

I've seen this with ESPN as well. Whenever they put in the "28/58" bottom-line I can see the edges on both sides. Its on the uplink leaving transmission in Bristol Ct. Most cable customers can't see it, but you can on satellite.

DBS and cable vendors receive the signal from ESPN the same way C-band clients do, and they simply turn it around, meaning that all subs, cable, DBS, or C-band, get a version of the original sat signal. If most cable customers can't see it, that's probably because most tv's are overscanned, and likely has little to do with the fact that they are receiving it on cable.

On the other hand, there may be something just a bit iffy time-base-wise with the original signal when they are in their 28/58 squeeze that is enough to affect "local" processing, such as the receiver or encoder at the middleman vendor (cable or DBS) or at the STB so that a particular vendor's output could show problems that are not visible to other subs.
