Here is the problem I am having:

Whenever I am recording a show and I go to the Program Guide and then try to set a PVR timer for a show in the future by highlighting the show and then pressing select or the record button, it automatically jumps back to the live feed and displays "Recording Stopped"on the screen. Then it locks up and won't allow me to do anything except power it off and then back on again.

This is my second 508 to do this and it is getting really irritating. I have the newest software upgrade and have tried resetting the box numerous times but nothing seems to work. Does anyone have any ideas as to why this is happening?

By the way, I am a long time viewer of this website and visit it every day. This is my first post. Thanks for the help!

Try setting timers only when you aren't recording, work with their system rather than fighting it.

Welcome to DBSTalk grneal, and thanks for joining us! :hi:

I wish I had a solution for you, but I do just exactly what you describe on both of my 508s almost on a daily basis and have never had that happen to me. When you power it off after a lockup, are you doing the power reset (hold power button for 5 seconds or so until record light comes on), or are you using the power button on the remote? Try pulling the smartcard and reinserting (carefully!) as well.

The intermittent, only affecting some users bugs are definitely the hardest ones to kill...

I have 2 508s. The older one does this occasionally. The newer one hasn't needed a reboot since day 1. Go figure..same boxes, same software, same user, different results.

Thanks for the quick replies.

Unfortunately, the problem also happens when nothing is recording too. Only, when nothing is recording it just pops back to the live feed and does nothing. It doesn't lock up, but it doesn't allow me to set the PVR timer either. The only way I can set a timer is to use the Search function and then press select on the results that pop up or if I am watching a show(either live or PVRed) I can hit the right arrow button to preview the next show and then when I hit select I can set the PVR timer for that show. Unfortunately, the right arrow button preview functionality only allows me to jump one show in the future, not multiple shows. I can't think of anything else to do except to send this one back too. It is really weird that the exact same thing is happening on 2 different 508s. Luckily, I have the $1.99 monthly warranty.

Again, any suggestions are welcomed.

Are you sure your unit has been upgraded to the latest code level?

Instead of pushing the select button in the guide, try pushing the record button while hovering above the show you want to record.

My 501 kicks me back to Live quite often while setting recordings from the EPG but I have never had a recording stop.

I am on my 7th 508 and everyone has had this problem intermittantly. To restart the recording, push the power button on the 508 for 5 seconds until both light come on. On reboot the recording will restart.
