I've recently moved from Dish to DTV, and wanted to sell my Dish 5000 on Ebay. I got an email from a guy who wanted my Location ID and some other information. Being a trusting person (and a bit of an idiot) I gave the info to him.
I'm now starting to gather information telling me that I made a potentially big mistake. I hoping that my closed account will make a difference.
Any advice on fixing my mistake? Any background information on which info to give and which to keep secret?
Thanks for educating me.

Just wondering though - did you sell this receiver to him?
Also, nowdays.. - to ask somebody who is selling his receiver among other places on a controvercial E-bay - his Location ID, i d say is a legit question.. certain Location ID values can indicate to the potencial buyer if the receiver had been ECMed in the past ("Electronic Counter Measured" so to speak) - that would make it unusable, next to garbage...
Some other information - often could be a legit question as well - the potencial buyer might want to find out if there No Money owing on the IRD, from Bill "non-payment", purchasing PPVs and not paying them etc...
Cuz i believe if some money is owing on the receiver from not paying bills, this receiver cannot be activated, until the balance is paid..
In any case - E-bay is a contrivercial place.. (I personally never bought or sold anything there)...
Therefore as the saying goes: "by hanging out with the wolves, one might start to bark as well" (oh however the saying goes... LOL - i know wolves do not bark, they do/pronounce something else "late at night"... hehe - but my english is not 100%, so currently i forgot the word of what wolves do.. :)
There - i think i remembered! - they Howl.. "Howling Wolf" etc..
so: "by hanging out with the wolves, one might HAVE to start to howl like one as well" :)
Hopefully the above explanation(s) help somewhat and i didn't confuse you even further :D

No I didn't. It's still on the auction block. But I'm hoping that the person who does buy it won't be cheated out of its use.
Thanks for your thoughts, Darkman.
E-Bay is a good option to purchase goods but like anything else there are a few sellers that are scam artist. Potential buyers of DBS equipment ask certain questions to cover their tails. People who are on the DHP or ones with large balances due try to sell receivers so they can make a buck. These receivers are useless to the buyer because they contain excess baggage. If I was a buyer looking for an additional receiver I would want to protect myself. Nothing worse than buying a receiver then calling Dish only to find out it was leased equipment and you have to send it back. You have no recourse against the seller. Like anything else potential buyers of anything need to beware.

Actually, there is some recourse. If a seller sends you a product that doesn't belong to them (as in a DHP customer) they have sold you stolen property. If they mailed it to you over State lines, it's a Federal offense. I'd have no problem with contacting the authorities to give the seller what they justly deserve.

The nice thing is that if you pay Via Paypal they do have a buyer protection plan and for a few bucks they can offer a money back guarentee where Paypal will buy back the product if you do not like it

hmm... that is pretty good i guess..
I never Enquired into PayPal's operation... Nice to know i guess...
Good Info!
From the Paypal Buyer Protection Plan (http://www.paypal.com/cgi-bin/webscr?cmd=_pbp-info-outside)
Does not cover cases where you are disappointed with the item you have received
It is basically for Items not received at all or received significantly different than what was described in the listing and is provided for "free" by Paypal. I'm not aware of any other types of protection plans they offer.

Why would anyone want to buy a 5000 IRD anyway? There's so many better options out there.
From what I know, things like the SN# are often asked by both legit and illegit (pirate) buyers. The Legit ones clear them with E* and the illegit use them to decide if the box is hackable.
I've bought quite a bit of stuff on ebay and never been duped or ripped off, but I would avoicd it for DBS gear unless it was a referall from the for sale/trade group here.
Just looking at the fact that most sellers include things like the type of smart-card in their headers for their auctions means they're only selling them for one purpose, and it ain't legit.
