Hello All:
I live in St.Louis area but do go on month long business trips to Washington DC. I also have a home there. During my recent visit I brought along my receiver to my home in DC and hooked it up to the dish antenna. I was able to get all the St. Louis channels for a day and a half and then it started spitting out a message that I am outside the viewing area and blocked access to the local channels. I understand the spot beam thing, but I was wondering as to why it would work perfectly for a day and a half and then fail. Any insight into this is greatly appreciated.
Thanks

Did you have a phone line connected? Sounds like your box checked in and caller ID gave away your move.

Yeah. I connected the phone line to it. I have another receiver thats been disabled for a while now. If I get that receiver enabled and not plug it in to a phone line, will I be able to see the local channels then ? :-)
Thanks

I went to Arkansas and tried to get the Houston channels which at the time I subed to and I got the message on the screen No signal from spotbeam . So I had to change the address to the Arkansas address to get the Little Rock locals. The funny thing was, I thought and the csr from dish thought, that Houston wasn't on a spotbeam. When I went back to Texas I still could pick up Little Rock locals since they were on 110 sat and no spotbeam.
The weird thing was I had a 301 which had Little Rock locals for a week and when I plugged it back in after two months of not using it and I had switched to Houston locals , I still had Little Rock locals and super stations. The csr said the unit never got the hit to change the programming while it was disconnected. I could have left that one receiver that way and had two sets of locals and never changed it, but I went ahead and did change it to be right.

I just got my disabled receiver activated, and it tries to get the signal from Spotbeam 5 at 119 Satellite and it gets zero signal. So how did this work for day and a half on my other receiver is baffling me more now. I am sure Dish didnt go from a broadcast to spotbeam last night :-)

So much for the story that they don't care about "moving."

The St. Louis locals are indeed on a spot beam. My guess is that the you are on the fringe of the Spot while Dish was either making an adjustment or something of that nature. Looking at the spot beam map here, http://wvjw.info/dbs-beam/echo7.gif, I have no idea how you were able to see the channels in the first place.
Check the power level on transponder 5 at 119°. The St. Louis locals use that transponder on spot 11.
See ya

Hello Tony:
huh..I dont know why it worked for a day and a half...when I lost the signal today, I was still seeing about 40% signal strength on Transponder 5 at 119 Satellite. and the Dish Technician too was confused.
I looked at the map you you referred to. I see that Kansas City is on Beam 9 on Transponders 1 & 3. And I can see that for both these transponders I am getting 120 Signal Strength. So would I be able to get KC local channels here then? Cant live without local news from my state :-)
THANKS!!
Are you sure you were not getting channels from Carolina?
The transponders you are getting on 1 and 3 are different beam, They have Harrisburg, PA and Boston, MA on them.

JLIf you have *two* receivers, one in St. Louis and one in D.C., both hooked up to phone lines, Dish will pick up on that. They don't really care if the phone number your receiver dials in from doesn't match your address - but they *do* care if you have multiple recivers dialing in from different areas (i.e. all receivers have to be in the same house).
