From another (now closed) thread:
What is:

VOD fees (ex DVR fees) were revised - now:??

Is that the per Receiver fee I currently pay or what? The only fees I know about are DVR fees for future 508s and 921s and the per receiver fee we all pay.

The fees are for 501, 522s and 921s not the 501 or 508. No one knows about the 7100/7200. The change was that the reduced fee of $4.99 or so will apply if the sub has AT 50 or up.

Actually it is 510s and 921s. They changed the name to VOD(Video on Demand) fee. They also changed the amounts. The Per Reciver fee has nothing to do with it and has not changed.

1st of all, 508s, 501s and 721s are free for life.

The new "DISH Player-DVR" 510, and upcoming 522 & 921 will have a $4.98 "VOD" fee added to the programming subscription with the exception of America's Everything Pak.

That's all there is to it.

HTguy,

Don't forget that the VOD fee will still be $10/mo if you don't get any AT or Latino package.

I'm only interested in HD programming plus a few network programs with my 6000 and 501 receivers. So I sub only to the locals plus the HD packages. To do that, E* charges me $10/mo extra ($5 access fee and $5 second receiver).

But when it's available, I'll replace the two receivers with the 921 and I'll be paying $15/mo extra ($5 access fee plus $10 VOD fee). However, when E* adds additional HD channels to the 105 sat, I'll get the SuperDish upgrade with a 1 year commit to AT50.

So to get these new HD channels will cost $30/mo ($25 AT50 plus $5 VOD) or an additional $15 for 12 months. At the end of that year, I'll drop the AT50 and save $15/mo or possibly pick up an additional HD premium channel if available.

While I can't confirm it absolutely at this time, it has been reported that the new VOD fees have been set to a maximum of $4.98/mo regardless of subscription.

You can well understand that those of us who have difficulty with even AT50 have an even harder time swallowing $10 more per month. If anything, the folks who can easily fork out for AEP are in a better position to pick up the higher DVR fees. If E* wants to get my money for a receiver and DVR fee, they'll have to make it take a smaller bite out of my monthly budget. Perhaps there are not many people like me (so I've been told), or perhaps they just don't need my money, but it seems silly to cut people like me out of the market.

Anyone current sub who wants to record SD and avoid the VOD fee can go to places like DishDepot and get a referbed 501 with warranty and no VOD for around $280. Although I had problems with the first few 501's I got two years ago my current 501 has been problem free for over a year and I've never come close to filling up the 35 hour capacity.

Also, I'd like to see E* offer and AE-HD package that includes every HD channel (no SD) and waives the VOD and access fee.

Wouldn't that be the HD package $10/mo and the $5/mo access fee? $15 for only HD. You can get that now.

Oh, and don't ask about gettging HBO-HD and SHO-HD included. They can only be had as part of their respective packages. You could of course add them to your lineup ala carte and just not watch their SD channels.

I sure wouldn't bet the farm on that. All of us that bought the "lifetime" DishPlayer PTV service thought that too.

Cyclone,

I'm already doing that. An America's Everything-HD Pak would be every HD channel they have (including the Premium HD channels) and none of the SD channels. In fact, as more HD channels become available, I'd like to see them offer a $25/mo HD package that waives the access fee and has a $5 VOD fee just like they do with the Latino Pak.

There aren't enough HD channels to that now, but I'm thinking a year ahead on this.

The reason the VOD fees are per box instead of per account (as many people have complained) is because they are generated upon activation by receiver number (which identifies the model).

This is E*'s system for VOD fees. They can't go back & turn them on for all the old 501s, 508s & 721s.

But when the 1st DishPlayers came out they tried to key it to the account based upon the promotion. Some people had fees, some people didn't (for 3 years anyway), some people paid $99 later, etc. That's what created problems in their system.
