The VoOm (http://www.voom.com) monster ate it.
The FCC gave two of the TPs at 61.5 that Dish was using (including the HD-PPV TP) to VoOm (http://www.voom.com)

In my guide I see that the HD PPV channel is there (showing Lord of the Rings). So is it gone or not?
And, if I order it (which I want to do tonight) is LOTR cropped to fill the screen or is it in OAR? Thanks!

Is the PPV HD movies in widescreen format (like their DVD versions) or is it really HD?

Its usually Widescreen like the DVDs, but the last Lord of the Rings was supposedly cropped to 16x9.
It doesn't show up in my guide either. I called Dish about this and they said it moved it to 148 and told me to point my dish there. If I point my dish to 148 instead of 61.5, won't I lose my local channels or international?

It should be coming back to 61.5 shortly after Nov 19 when the Discovery HD channel moves off of 9420 and goes full time to 9421 on 110.
In answer to your question, yes you would lose your locals, but the internationals are mirrored on 148.

Won't this all be moot once Superdish gets going? Seems like eventually they'll dump all the HD from the side birds.

How's the picture quality? Is it true HD or upconverted? Are they transmitting DD surround sound? Is is worth it or stick with renting DVDs?

I watched LOTR on HD PPV a couple of weeks ago and found it stunning. I didn't have the DVD handy to compare the two but It definitely looked better than DVD. More depth is the only way I can describe it. On a visual movie like LOTR it was definitely worth the PPV fee. It was 16x9 but I'm not sure that there was much content lost.

Oh yea your other questions:
Is it true HD or upconverted?
I'm not sure what you mean by true HD. I think that was originally shot on film and not with a high definition camera. And if it was originaly shot on film and not digitally then there isn't any "data" to upconvert. But i'm sure it was a native transfer to HD.
Are they transmitting DD surround sound?
Yes DD5.1

BTW: The HD PPV did not move to 148. It was always there. It did move to the 8PSK Tp there, though.
It just left 61.5. With new channels popping up on the scene, it is not known whether the HD PPV will re-appear on 61.5 or not.
Are any TP's still open on 110 or have locals taken them up?
ehren, there are some which are less than full, but no empty ones.
overcompressed HD here we come!
