You said it takes up to 5 seconds for a changed channel to appear. I have a 501. How do they compare on this feature? Is it worse or just still an annoying fact to deal with?

I think you might want to provide context with this question. I don't know who you are asking? the 508 does not take 5 seconds for a channel to appear. It is pretty quick and not a problem for me.

I think this is that old dead horse that people like to drag out and beat once in awhile. :) analog vs digital channel changing.
If you have a digital system, cable or satellite, changing channels by clicking up/down is going to be slow. People that are used to the analog cable find it very annoying. But eventually everyone learns to use the guide and then they don't have a problem any more.
I apologize if this isn't what you meant,
G
Actually I don't think it is a dead horse being pulled back out to beat on some more. I don't think it has anything to do with the difference of analog cable etc. It is a fact that the channel changing by using the up and down arrows is slow as hell with DISH. My brother just recently switched from DTV with Pegasus and went to DISH. He seemed to be happy overall but was very upset at how slow the receivers changed channels. I know this is a fact as I changed about four years ago and for quite a while it irritated the hell out of me also.
I have talked to several 20 - 30 people who have switched and the channel changing speed does bother them also. The channel changing speed on the DTV receivers that I had and that my brother had were RCA receivers and were alot faster at least 3 X faster. YMMV

I know several people that just started getting digital cable that complain about the very same thing. Dish may be a little slower but when it comes down to it everyone eventually uses the guide.
I think my comment was accurate:
1. "Old" how long has this been debated? Answer: Years
2. "Dead" Since everyone eventually uses the guide, whom does it affect? Answer: Noone

Dead horse or not, it's a valid gripe. I have a 4000 (with a few worn-out buttons on the remote) and rarely use the guide. I have noticed that after a certain number of channels that things bog down. There's sometimes a 5-7 lag before things set themselves.
Even with this, I'll freeze in hell before I go back to cable.
(BTW: Yeah, I know. "Well, replace the remote you idiot!" I AM!)
