This would be very cool!

Northern Sky Research recently released a report, "Satellite-WiFi Convergence: A Developing Model for Broadband Access," examining the technical and economic viability of offering converged satellite-WiFi services. By integrating WiFi technology with a satellite backbone link, satellite providers can expand the reach of their ubiquitous coverage, spread the cost of satellite solution, and provision low-cost broadband service to anywhere in the world, the report found. More on Northern Sky Research can be found at: http://www.northernskyresearch.com.

Integral Systems Unveils EPOCH Software - Integral Systems, a provider of satellite command and control technology and satellite ground systems, unveiled Version 4 of its EPOCH satellite command and control software last week. The version provides a command and control solution integrated with the Microsoft Office suite of products to provide automation and reporting capabilities, the company said.

Hitachi Has Ethernet Solution - Hitachi High-Technologies recently unveiled a new, two-board modular Ethernet encoder solution. Based on MPEG-2 encoder modules from NTT Electronics, the MP2000 enables the design of compact, high quality, low delay MPEG-over-IP solutions, Hitachi said.

Interestingly, the buyers of the assets of AlphaStar (an early failed attempt at FSS DBS, similar to PrimeStar) attempted to revamp the brand name as an internet satellite company. They proposed using central up/down facilities located throughout the country with wirless connections between the customers (home) and the local central up/down facilities. From their website it appears that they have never gotten to first base. http://alphastar.com/ I had talked to them several years ago about their product, but suspected at the time that they would never "get off the ground". This system would allow the end user all of the disadvantages of satellite internet combined with the problems of wireless. What a concept. :D

When I saw the title, I thought of this project, using a old Primestar dish to achieve a 10 mile WI-FI range:
