View Full Version : E* --> D* What do I need?

For a number of reasons, I've pretty much decided to give up on Dish and try out DirecTV. However, I have no idea on what I'll need to buy as far as switches and LNBs. Currently I have a 501 and a 4722 in my home and a 3822 in my motorhome, all on ONE account and only ONE receiver hooked to a phone line (501).

1. To get locals, D's site says I need a multi-satellite dish. Is that the 3 LNB dish?

2. I will probably start with 1 DirecTivo and 2 IRDs in the house and just swap one IRD to the RV when needed. What type of switch do I need (my current setup has 2 sw21s which I assume will not work with D*)?

3. Are any of the parts off of the current installation salvageable for the new setup? I'm thinking the coax wires are okay (but I'll need 2 new runs) and I'm hoping the mast of the antenna dish will work with the new dish so I can just slide the old one off and the new one on.

I'll have more questions as I think of them and would appreciate any help.

Welcome,

Simply put your triple LNB dish has a built in multi switch with 4 outputs and built in multi-switch.

Yes get the 3 LNB dish.

The dish 500 mast did work with my LNB dish so you should be set there.

Dtv does not involve half the BS that dish requires.

Thanks for the quick response. So, I'll need one run of cable from the dish to each box (2) plus 2 runs for a DirecTivo, correct? So my intended simply uses all of the built-in outputs?

Yes, but if your a new customer the install is free and the equipment dirt cheap.

That is one question that I was going to ask but you answered it. Good to know. Thanks!

The switch is entirely different for DirecTV than it is for Dish. But, if it is a triple-LNB dish, then the switch is part of the Dish and doesn't require any power. It is a four-output switch.

They should use the pre-existing dish location for Dish Network. In most cases, it's just a straight cable swap. If you are getting a DirecTivo installed, then a second line will have to be run.
