:sure: Hello folks,

With Christmas coming soon, I'm wanting to buy my brother -- who, like me, is also a DirecTV subscriber -- two new receivers. He's had his since 1998 (same year as me), and has never updated. His service warranty with Best Buy was up some time ago, and it's definitely time to get him going on something newer. (He has an 18-inch rooftop dish and older Sony receivers -- the ones without logos for, say, VH1 Classics and Lifetime Movie Network -- and they're ones that list locals in the 800s and 900s rather than their over-the-air channel numbers.)

Here are my ideas:
1. I'd like to get him one DirecTV/Tivo combo -- DirecTVDVR (whatever it's called) -- but I'm wondering, if he had two DVRs would he have to pay $4.99 a month for that second receiver as well? (Also worth pointing out: It's been said that installation for DirecTVDVR is highly recommended. Only, I do not know why.)

2. If I go with just one DVR, I'd like to get in the second receiver one that has Interactive Wink service (I have the RCA430 myself; if Sony or Hughes are better, let me know why, please!).

While I've already asked one question, I'd like some input from those willing to tell me what they have in receivers (Sony, Hughes, RCA, et al.). My one-and-only RCA has 32 bits -- the bare minimum requirement (my rule, folks!).

I'd appreciate the help. Thank you in advance!

TIVO fee is PER account, so just ONE $5 a month charge! Do get TWO tivos, with their price at $99 or less its the ONLY way to go. Its my firm belief non DVR receivers are becoming obsolete.

Installation is included because most foliks need new switches for more sat feeds. Each TIVO requires 2 sat feeds. The providers found customer satisfaction was poor when people didnt hook up the secnd feed.

You will, of course, still have to pay the standard $5 mirror charge for having a second receiver. Since he already has more than one receiver, he shouldn't see a change in the bill other than the $4.99 for TiVo service which covers all TiVos on the account, assuming he deactivates the old receivers he is replacing.

So its ok to buy these units at $99 as gifts then for current customers (or new customers for that matter)? They won't ask YOU to sign up for DirecTv when you buy it? I was thinking of buying one for my dad for christmas. But since he already has DirecTv well this affect anything? Thanks!

I am thinking of doing this for my dad in Phoenix. He will be AMAZED at ewhat a DVR can do, and so will the rest of the family.

Does D have a special department for this, to arrange install and such for a gift?

Thanks all for responding. Only one more thing: If I were to buy  two  DVRs, can any of these models use Wink Interactive service (I have one and love it, especially for the Weather Channel's interactive service)?

I'm not aware of one.
http://www.directv.com/DTVAPP/imagine/DTVInteractive.dsp does not list any DVR's that have Wink. Perhaps you could record local news?

No, DirecTivo's are not Wink compatible. I personally get my weather from the Internet. ;)
