View Full Version : My First DirecTIVO Problem
Tonight I was switching channels at the same time a season pass fired. The DirecTivo locked up and would not respond to the remote at all. A reboot fixed the problem, but I lost the first 6 minutes of the show (Friends). A big moan went up from the family, who remembers all of my Dishplayer problems.
This is the only problem I have noticed in the 20 days since I switched from Dish.
Is an occasional reboot a good Idea to avoid this type of problem?

Phil, Phil, Phil...
You KNOW you're not supposed to be watching live TV any more :p
Don't bother needlessly rebooting it. In over 2 years with my DirecTiVos, this has never happened to me. The unit must have somehow sensed you are a former DP owner and it decided to screw with you.
To be safe from now on, watch as little live TV as possible. If live TV is a must, then avoid channel changes exactly on the hour and half-hour when the timer is most likely to fire. Activate the on-screen clock to help with this :
1) start playing a program
2) press SELECT - PLAY - SELECT - 9 - SELECT
The very small digital clock should appear in the lower right corner of the screen.

I've had my DirecTivo for over 2 years and never had a problem like that. Kinda sounds like some people I know who get "click happy" with the mouse on their computer and it locks up. :D But since I almost never watch live TV I guess I've never tried to change the channel when a season pass fires off.
As for rebooting, I've only had to reboot my DirecTivo twice: Once when I upgraded the drives and one other time it was locked up due to DirecTV frying the Advanced EPG (was about 2 years ago if I remember correctly). Other then that it happily records away.

"It was a million to one shot doc"
Georges father on seinfeld when he sat on the fucili Jerry. The Assman episode.
Seriously though I wouldn't worry about that happening again. I've had my 2 unit's since last January and havn't done that

I have had my DirecTiVo for almost 2 years. I have the series 1. I have never had that happen. If I change the channel as a season pass is firing I might get the warning do I want to continue recording. It usually goes to the other tunner.
I hope it was a fluke. I have 2 DirectTIVOS and this was the only problem I have had. They are getting a lot of use this weekend (snow and cold in Denver).
Lew, great to see you back! I am a lurker on your forum and used to follow the old WebTV Dishplayer forum.

I also haven't had anything like that happen to me in my over 2 years. But like others have said, I rarely channel surf anymore either.
