View Full Version : New Samsung DirecTivo SIR-S4120
Anyone out there own this box who can provide some feedback? Among other things, the American Satellite website touts the speed with which this unit displays the on screen guide -- a notable drawback of other Series2 DirecTivos that I've seen in action. Any insights are appreciated. Thanks in advance.

Hi and welcome to DBSTalk.Com! :welcome_s
I have the Samsung and the Hughes HDVR3.
To tell you the truth and from what I have seen, the Samsung is only SLIGHTLY faster than the Hughes at displaying the guide. The difference really isn't anything to write home about. On the other hand though, so far the Samsung has functioned perfectly and I've very pleased.

Thank you for clearing up the mystery of the speed differences. There is someone on another forum that keeps claiming the the Samsung is "lightening fast". I say if it is true that all Tivos are the same then this is impossible. The difference that you describe might be due to a faster hard drive. If that is the reason then a simple upgrade good give as all fast Tivos.

One thing to keep in mind is that the Samsung might appear faster to someone because it's brand new and doesn't have a ton of stuff set to record or lots of stuff in the To Do list or in Now Playing. My old T-60 is pretty fast too when I recently cleared everything on it. Now that it's full of recordings again and tons of season passes, it's slowed back down.
It's possible that the Samsung might have a slightly faster hard drive but I haven't read much about it. Typically all DirecTivo's, no matter what the brand is, are all made in the same factory in Mexico with the exact same part, just different covers and brand name attached. Not sure about the Samsung but it would suprise me if Samsung is producing them on their own.
