I am looking into buying a 3 room setup (Directivo with 2 additional receivers). I will not be using the 3rd receiver until I finish my basement. I do not want to get charged the $4.99 fee for the 3rd receiver since it will not be used for some time. I do not have have a problem activating all the units, but I just dont want to pay for a receiver that will not be used for several months.

I wondered about that too. Can you get a three (or four) room setup without paying the additional mirror fees right away? Or is there a minimum time you need to keep all receivers active?

You will need to activate all receivers at the start, you can deactivate all receivers except the main receiver without getting the dealer a chargeback, and getting yourself a charge. Call Directv to find out if there is a minimum time the receivers have to be activated. I have one of my three I activated in July sitting in a closet but I did replace that one with a TiVo.

Yes you activate them then ask D* to suspend services on the one you are not useing. The last time i did this for someone they were able to suspend up to 6 months,so if you do this just give them the time frame and reason and they shouldn't have a problem with it.

I just did the same thing and was wondering about that too. I ordered the 3 room system, 1 tivo, 2 regular, and was going to save the 3rd line for when I wanted to add another tv somewhere. I don't want to have to pay $5 a month if I'm not going to use it. I also have 2 boxes sitting in my garage that aren't being used back when I used to have directv last year.

I actually ordered the 3 room because I wasn't sure if I would have enough lines to run 2 to the tivo and 1 to the other tv with a 2 room. I figured the 3 room was for 3 standard receiver, or 1 tivo and 1 regular.

Here is some information I received back from an online retailer:

"For the contemplated three room set-up, you could indeed activate all three units and, after 30 days, deactivate one (or both) basic receivers and thereby eliminate the $4.99/month mirroring charge from DirecTV. The important thing to remember is that your "primary" receiver (i.e. the first one activated, presumably the TiVo) is the one, and the only one, for which you have the 12-month subscription commitment."
