Is there an easy way to tell how much recording
space is left/available on the TIVO units?

Nope. You just have to do it the hard way - use a calculator and add up the running times of all your recordings, then subtract it from the maximum for your DVR.

Even this won't really tell you, as different types of shows use different amounts of space. Best to just let it do its thing and not worry about it.

Or, you can leave "suggestions" on and base your guesstimate on the recorded suggestions.

I never even worry about available space. I figure that when the Tivo suggestions start disappearing, I know I'm getting low.

It's not exactly an easy way, but if you already have a hacked Tivo it's relatively easy to check with TivoWeb or program a remote control key sequence to show this information on screen for you.
