I have a Dish DVR-510 which I'm really enjoying, but I'm finding that I would like to keep an archive of some favorite shows and movies. Doing that on the 510 will eventually cause me to run out of space - not good - so I'd like to burn 'em to DVDs. I had heard that there was some sort of DVD burner that talked to the 510, but now I'm thinking I was in the Twilight Zone when I thought of that. :-)

So, what kind of setup have people built for this capability (include specific model numbers and prices, if possible, please!), and does anyone have any good experiences with using a DVR -> Mac or PC, and then burning DVDs on the computer?

My end goal is to have DVDs that can play on my (Apple) laptop, and on generic DVD players.

Thanks, y'all!

Hauppauge WinPVR250, Pioneer DVR-A06U DVD burner. Since I just got the burner, I haven't actually done DVD's of DBS recordings - however, I have done VCD's /SVCD's prior.

Sat. receiver > Panasonic DMR-HS2 > DVD-R/DVD-RAM

Sat. Receiver > Formac Studio DV > iMac > DVD-R

I use the Panasonic far more than the Mac because it does realtime MPEG encoding and can go up to 6 hours on a DVD without an expensive software upgrade.

The Panny DVD recorder is probably the easiest way to go for sure. Good PQ as well. I have dumped my 508 shows to my DV camcorder via Svideo and then imported into imovie/iDVD. The results are excellent PQ and a professional quality DVD with motion sub menus and everything you could want from a DVD. Lots more effort than the DVD recorder option but a more finished product in the end.

Beware that last I read on the Apple discusssion boards, there were some problems with Macs reading disk recorded off a Panasonic DMR-HS2. Not sure if they ever got that bug fixed.

I don't worry much about that because I rarely watch DVD's on my Mac... I just record them there. I do have one complaint with my DMR-HS2 in that it has a bug that reboots the thing if I record a show and then try to burn a DVD. I probably have an early software release since I got it in the first wave of releases.
