I'm about ready to bite the bullet and swap out my beloved UTV for a DTivo.
Reasons? Who knows how much longer UTV will be supported? Plus I can get the DTivo for a hundred bucks at Best Buy and sell my UTV for big bucks on Ebay! Saving five bucks a month on service.
I just want to double check what I think I have read about this: When I bring home the DTivo, I basically just plug it in just like my UTV is configured, right? Hook up the two coax lines, plug in the s-video from the Tivo to the television; hook up the RCA connectors for sound.
I'm also thinking about putting in a basic home theater system with DVD/CD player and multi- speakers. In this situation, what order do you hook up the system? Tivo to Television to DVD/amplifier?
One more question.... I'd like to hear from all of you who have switched from UTV to DTivo. Let me know the good, the bad, and the ugly, if any.
Thanks,
Ken in Houston

Ken,

I did the same thing you are planning in early November. Here are some things to consider:
1) There have been some reported audio problems using the optical toslink to some DD receivers (Kenwood and Yamaha to name a few). :nono2:
If you're not planning to get a DD receiver than that's one less thing to worry about.
2) There is a current bug that most, if not all, DirecTivo owners are experiencing. When going to pick a program to record, the message " Acquiring Program Guide data from Satellite. Some data available now. Full Data in 1 - 2 days". According to a post on the Tivo forum, Tivo and DirecTV are aware of the problem and are working on it as of this writing.

As far as setup, that's all I did was pull the plug from my UTV and plug in my Tivo. You'll need a phone line for setup and a software update, after that it's not needed. I have S-video to my TV and my audio coming from my Kenwood (via RCA cables).

To tell you the truth, I miss my UTV because it performed flawlessly. Everything worked. I loved the EPG BUT, as you, I wanted to take advantage of the $99 low price and make some bucks off Ebay (I got $220 for my Sony UTV). Don't get me wrong, I think the DirecTivo is a great unit and I only hope the bugs are worked out soon.

Check

here from time to time for Tivo info on problem 2. (http://www.tivocommunity.com/tivo-vb/showthread.php?s=&threadid=151320) :hurah:

Just so you guys know, the current problem really isn't a problem, more of a display bug. All the data is still there and season passes are working properly. Basically everything is normal except for the display. Now that I know nothing is wrong I don't even think about it anymore, I just ignore it.

First "bug" in nearly 3 years of having a DirecTivo.
