I have to admit, it would be pretty poor timing on Dish's part to announce rate increases right after the succesful "Pig" campaign... :icon_lame
Hell have an auction for someone to call in and do it! What would be even better if they had Ned Beatty on as a guest!

With the always increasing customer base, why doesn't Dish use Advertising revenue to keep our rates the same?

I would gladly except #1 to see #6! :eek2:
This is exciting news. We are renaming our packages to better reflect the actual content. AT50 has long been more than 50 channels, as have our other packages. We've actually been understating the offering as well as undercharging. AT50 will now be AT60 and actually there are still more than 60 channels in that package. The $1 increase that we have been eating for months will now be added. See, here at E*, we have saved you over $12 by holding off on that increase for over 12 months. <nobody will remember we were obligated by that price guarantee we promised anyway> When compared to other products and services, our rate of increase is much less than other products you could be spending your money on.
<cue meaningless graph with no X/Y coordinates or labels, showing E* pricing on slow but steady climb, compared to product ABC on a steep incline.>
Here we have our package costs compared to the cost of crack cocaine on the streets of LA. See, our costs are not going up near as much as it could. You can feel safe knowing that E* is looking out for your best interests. Besides, if these programmers didn't keep overcharging for their meager offerings we wouldn't have to pass the costs on to you. Call them up and ask why their costs are going up more than the inflation rate. We held off as long as we can.
Plus, we have added channels to make our exciting new packages an even better deal. Reality TV has just been added, along with a slew of shopping channels. Don't forget the remote control channel either. We don't have to provide such a great service to you, but we do so to make your dbs viewing that much more enjoyable, all at the lowest cost possible.
Besides, you've spent this much money on our equipment and monthly programming costs already. In fact, you are almost like owners, you can feel good knowing that you are helping to pay for the costs to bring you such good entertainment.
Well, let's talk about the exciting news with our new 921 receiver.
Charlie -- do not mention this, due to the Tivo lawsuit. Just kill a few minutes, until our special guest is ready.
Now, for some real excitement, let's introduce tonight's special guests... Jim Ferguson and Britney Troise. .........

Britney was, and is, a terrific young lady. The posts here over the past few years have been in the poorest of taste.
Britney is a straight-A student, attending a top university and living her life.
Some of you should be so lucky to even know a person of this character and honesty.
Some of the comments directed her way are shameful, and while not reflective of the overall membership of this group, is one reason I only drop in to visit once in a while.

People who are calling dish to do "yearly" credit card auto pay are being told about the increases in these two packages
looks like a buck on at 100 and 2 bucks on at150
rock
looks like a buck on at 100 and 2 bucks on at150Looks like I'll be downgrading my Americas Everything Pack plus all four movie packages to the top 50 (or 80) package and get rid of Cinemax (unless they announce Cinemax HD) AND Starz (unless they announce StarzHD). I'm tired of rate increases. I don't watch many SD channels and I don't want to pay extra for something I'm not watching. I hope I can convince MANY people of the same thing so that it makes this $1 increase a loss for Dish Network, but I doubt it with the number of customers they have. A $1 increase could increase profits by $1,000,000 a month for them in just DVR owners. IMAGINE how much it would be if it were a $2 increase and for ALL E* customers. :nono:
Thanks, Dish Network, for giving me one more reason to sell my 6000U and switch to VOOM. I was only waiting for VOOM to get HBOHD and now they have it. :hurah:

Britney is a straight-A student, attending a top university and living her life.
That may be, but she lacked the acting ability, screen presence and comfort with the camera to bring to her weekly television show anything approaching a professional caliber performance. Her enthusiasm seemed forced and unnatural, and it sounded like she was reading from cue cards. I always assumed that Charlie or Jim put a niece or granddaughter in a Dish Network T-shirt, and told her to have at it.
That said, I'll agree that the "oink" comment was inappropriate.

Will they confirm the 921 release in the masses.
The Dish rep at CES said there wont be any in stock till Febuary other than the 20-30 sold each month like right now.
Is there a factory problem? Software? Or both?
The HDTIvo now has 200 in Beta in peoples homes (confirmed by the Tivo rep at CES). Looks like Direct TV is going to win and get there out first fully working (Dish still is missing features like the OTA guide).

It makes Dish look like a big HYPOCRITE saying that cable goes up every year. Dish has gone up every year for the last 3 years. The increases may be smaller than cable, but they are still increasing like cable does every year.
James Long
01-12-04, 09:58 AM
I don't believe a buck or two is bad, especially with cable going up $5 to $10 over the same period. But the pig campaign likes to quote percentages. With a low cost solution like AT100 (soon to be AT120), a $1 becomes a percentage worth discussing.
Yeah, I could pay a cable company $60 for the same channels, or less. :)

Dish Latino going up from $21.99 to $24.99. 13.6% increase.
Dish Latino Dos going up from $31.99 to $34.99. 9.38% increase.
How much you wanna bet these will be the percentages cable companies trumpet in their next set of ads? (Satellite increases prices of basic programming up to 13.6%!!! SQUEEEEAAALLL!!!)

While technically the AT150 package may have 201 different working "channels" you can tune to, I would not count:
Barker channels -- I think it's fair to say that the majority of these air a very short "rotation" of video clips that few people would consider "real" programming,
Music channels -- they count for something, but since they're not video channels, they should be treated separately,
Alternate sports channels -- the overwhelming majority of the time, they are off or blacked out.
I would also omit any channels that you can view without having a subscription (since paying for AT50, AT100, or AT150 doesn't actually add those channels), but I'll let that slide.
So IMHO one could say the AT150 package has:
123 channels of "real" programming,
12 shopping channels (:barf:, but I'll count them)
----
135 Total television channels (141 if you count the 6 alternate sports channels),
Plus:
31 stereo music channels (with one more around Christmas)
19 mono music channels
1 LDS-BYU Radio Network (does this ever have music?)

on charlie chat they say the are going to change top 150 to top 180 and charge more for it.
are they adding any channels or are they just changing the name (based on all the garbage channels already included) to justify their price increase?
i mean there is really less than 100 channels once you subtract the junk channels: cd/audio, foxsports, public interest.

It's only a name change for now, however channels that you may think as junk channels, others think of them as Gems, some of the channels you may think are gems others think are junk, everyone has different ideas on what is junk and what is a gem. Their are many here that love the FoxSports channels, their are those that like the Dish CD audio channels and some of us even like the PI channels. AT60, AT120 and AT180 are only marketing names and for marketing purposes, PI channels, Dish CD channels, Dish Audio channels, your local Fox Sports, Turner South here and all of the cable tv networks in these packages are counted and when you count these, their is already 60 or more channels in AT60, over 120 channels in AT120 and 180 or more channels in AT180.

David,
The name of the packages are AT100 CD and AT150 CD The channel count SPECIFICALLY includes the audio channels. Whether you think they should be counted or not. They are and have been since the original AT60 became AT100CD. (see http://ekb.dbstalk.com/19)
Sports alternate channels never count until some one's favorite sports team is playing on one of them and there is a glitch. Then it is the most important channel in the system! I can hear the screams here when some one is missing a Brewer's game or a Royals game. :) But okay, lets not count those.
BTW I did neglect to count the local RSN in the mix here. That can be anywhere from 1 to 3 channels depending on the area. I get two.
I also accidentally counted The travel Channel twice (once in the shopping channels mix)

See ya
Tony
I should have emailed charlie about replacing the stupid MUZAK channels with music choice or adding music choice in addition to the MUZAK channels. I betcha that would've gotten through to be asked on air since it's not a technical question that would have stumped the hosts. Of course they would have asked the programming person who would have said either "we're currently in negotiations with music choice" or "We'll get in contact with Music Choice to see if we can add them to our lineup in the future" or something of that nature.
It's interesting (but not surprising) that no mention was made in the Chat to price increases for the Latino packages. Could this mean they aren't going up in price after all?

I want to know how they can justify a 3.00 increase in AEP when the lower packs don't go up that much to equal a 3.00 increase. It looks like to me that Charlie is just trying to make up for the dvr fee that we are not suppossed to pay. Why else that amount. We aren't getting anything in the way of new channels to justify a 3.00 increase. Unless you count the Reality channel and the new Bingo channel crap. I can't even get this channel to play either in Texas or Arkansas. No use to me , but I wouldn' t play that junk anyway.
Still I would like to know why that amount and how they justify that large of an increase on that one package alone.

Yea, that was kind of my reaction too....
Let's see (grabbing the calculator), the % is 3.75%. Definately the worst increase of the bunch. The biggest customers are footing the bill for the smaller.
OK, now I'm confused - I just called customer service....
Was asking about annual payments.
AEP can't sign up for annual pay (as I thought), but I can take Top 150 and 4 movie packages and get annual price break?
Current Pricing AEP w/ locals = 80 * 12 = 960
+ PVR price break (1x 510)
(new pricing 83 * 12 = 996)
Annual:
Top 150: $473
4 Prem: $407
Locals: $72 (no annual break)
PRV Fee: $5*12 = 60
Total $1012
So, with the PVR break we're saving a few bucks with AEP. I'll save more when I add a 921 (and dump a 508). Unless I dump the the 510.
But, without a PVR fee, it's slightly cheaper to buy Ala-Cart and take the annual price break (that's silly). Even more savings if you consider signing up for annual now locks in the lower rate.
And something about Charlie's mention of AEP and the PVR fee really left a bad taste in my mouth. He inferred that AEP was not really a $3 price increase because of the $5 PVR savings. Silly - it's still $3 more this month then last, PVR fees don't apply equally to all customers, and two years back Charlie was constantly bragging that E* doesn't charge a PVR fee (which made sense considering the inferior product compared to TiVo).
(Sounds like when the PIG said they are adding a Cable Internet discount of $10 for Video customers and simultaneouely raised the price $10).
Sorry this discussion got split into two threads - caught this one first. I suppose a separate thread on pricing would probably make sense.

I'd like to redo the math. IIRC:
AT50 up zero to AT60, AT100 up 1 cent to AT120, AT150 up $1.01 to AT180
AT120 + HBO/Cine up $1.01 (Which is actually $1 more than AT120 went up)
My recall just died ... I didn't replay that part of the show last night when taking notes. But I seem to recall similar price changes on the other movie packs.
It looks like the Almost Everything Pack got the increase of $1.01 for AT180 and $1 for HBO/Cine that I remember seeing ... It would only take a $1 increase for Showtime to get to the $3 total increase.
