What fan did you use, and where did you find a 3 pin molex connector that fits the port on the 8VSB module board?
Thanks,
Mark,
Here is one someone posted: http://shop.store.yahoo.com/a-p/40mm5vdcfan.html . I ended up using a 12 volt fan and I ran a jumper from the 7 volt supply and into the 8VSB mod to run it at a lower speed. You probably wouldn't want to rig it quite like that though. ;)
I originally removed the contacts from the connectors and swapped them into the Dish fan connector so the fan could plug in fine and it worked, it just did not have quite enough voltage to start every time so I rigged it.
Mark,
I just unplugged mine last summer and it has been working fine. It is in a audio cabinet with a glass door, but has a lot of open space around it.
Maybe the DirecTivo fan is keeping it cool. :D

Thanks guys. I know that I don't really need the fan, but I'm looking at resale value here, not personal use.
Lee - what did you use to pull the pins out of the connector? That's what's got me a little stumped at this point. I've searched and found quite a few pin extractor tools, but they are all for a specific size pin, and I have no idea which one I'd need to do this.

The exact OEM fan that was in my unit can be had from Digi-Key: http://rocky.digikey.com/scripts/ProductInfo.dll?Site=US&V=259&M=KDE0504PEB3-8(MS)
Since the OEM model is a ball bearing design, I replaced mine with a sleeve bearing type that is 4 mm thicker and has more air flow and uses slightly more power. I was concerned since consumer electronics usually have a pretty tight power budget, but it's worked fine. The replacement however, while not "whisper quiet" has been much less obstrusive and hasn't acted up as of yet (2 yrs and counting). It's by the same manufacturer. See: http://rocky.digikey.com/scripts/ProductInfo.dll?Site=US&V=259&M=KDE0504PFS2-8 (I'm pretty sure this was it.. I'd have to pull the 8-VSB module and take it apart to verify since I've long discarded the receipt).
I simply cut the wires from the original connector and soldered the wires from the fan on, thus using the original connector. A 10 minute job.
... hope this helps.
Mark, it has been over a year, but I think I just used a micro screwdriver to wedge the tabs over and pulled the wire and connector out.

That did the trick, Lee. Thanks! Now, how do I get the pins back into the connector so that they stay in place? Are they supposed to just snap back in, or is there a trick to it?
Mine went back in ok, it does take a little foreceful pushing IIRC. You might have to bend the tab back out a little to ensure it will catch in the connector again.

I took the case off my module so it has some ventilation through the top of the 6000 and put the board back into the receiver.
So far so good. And my receiver no longer sounds like a bee hive. :)
