Any idea when TV guide will lauch.
Why do we need a TV Guide channel? DirecTV already provides the guide.

My understaning is that the TV guide will be interactive including local weather, news and sports. It will weakly replace the interactive service that just got discontinued. I really miss the local weather on the interactive. I checked the local temp using that channel every morning.

Apparantly TV Guide is going to supply D*'s guide data (for the EPG) or something like that and for some reason they wanted D* to carry a TV Guide channel as well. Makes absolutely no sense. Kinda reminds me of Primestar though although they had no EPG.

Hmmmm..... about a year ago, I played around with a friend's cable receiver which had a interactive TV guide channel (I believe it was Adelphia cable in Fillmore, CA). The TV guide was better than the DirecTiVo's grid guide, but still worse than Dish's EPG for the 301/50x. But, both DirecTV and Dish receivers have working EPGs. So, me thinks that it's a 24 hour "promotions" channel featuring celebrity interviews, upcoming shows, that sort of thing. If they include the "Thumbs Up To Record" feature for us DirecTiVo owners, it would be a killer app.

But, will the interactive part work with DirecTV DVRs which weren't Wink enabled?
Still an unnecessary channel taking up some bandwidth.

The contract with Wink was allowed to expire on December 22nd and, as far as I know, there is no replacement in yet. (There may be one in the future).
There may be no interactive features on the DirecTiVos, but there is the TiVomatic where you press ThumbsUp to record. I still believe that it's will be a programming loop which will promote programming and interviews. But, that's my guess.
